John Torode and Gregg Wallace are back in the MasterChef kitchen as they try to find the next best amateur cook for a 20th series – but could it be their last?
Shooting to fame for their judging talents and culinary expertise, John and Gregg recently spoke about potentially bowing out of the long-running program – and they’ve already both ruled out the possibility.
“Who would we leave it to? Don’t be ridiculous”, John, 58, scoffed. “That’s too much responsibility for anybody – to take over from me and him, there’s no way in the world. Where are you going to find two attractive people, one with hair, the other without, anywhere like that? There’s no way!”
The celebrity chef then admitted to Bella magazine there would only be one way for him to leave MasterChef – and it could be a while before he bows out: “I think to get me out of place, they’re going to have to push me out the door or blend my food to get me to taste it. That’s when I’ll be leaving.”
Prior to setting the record straight, John left his pal Gregg to talk about their strong professional bond, which may have worked in their favour in the past two decades. “We always have had an incredible level of professionalism and I think what that’s done over the years is developed a trust and confidence in each other. Even though we’re very different people, our approach to work is very similar”, Gregg revealed.
As mentioned, John and Gregg have made their way back to the MasterChef set for a twentieth series with the former sharing his disbelief: “I can hardly believe that we are into the 20th series of this unbelievably brilliant show. It’s such a point of pride and celebration. I believe food brings people together and every year we’re fortunate enough to be able to help incredibly talented, hard-working people realise their dream and indulge themselves in the joy that is MasterChef.”
While John and Gregg have accepted to reprise their judging roles, they are also set to be joined by a string of guest judges during the eight weeks of competition, and these will include former MasterChef winners as well as open fire chef Niklas Ekstedt who will be welcomed to set the semi-finalists up with a mass-catering challenge.
Another twist is due for the finalists as they will have the chance to travel out to Singapore to complete three challenges before cooking at the Chef’s Table.
Gregg and John will eventually have the last word – the final three contestants fighting for the winning title and trophy will have to cook one last three-course menu for the judges.
The 20th series of Masterchef was launched on BBC One on Monday (April 1, 2024) with a total of 58 amateur chefs competing for victory – but how will it all play out?
