Jon Miyahara’s cause of death has been revealed, nearly three weeks after he died at the age of 83.
Miyahara died of cardiopulmonary arrest, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and coronary artery disease, according to a death certificate obtained by PEOPLE.
Cardiopulmonary arrest happens when a person’s heart function and respiration stops, resulting in death, per the National Library of Medicine. It’s also known as cardiac arrest or circulatory arrest. When the heart suffers a reduced ejection fraction, it means the “amount of blood the heart can pump with each beat” is lower than the usual 55% to 60%, according to the American Heart Association.
The death certificate also indicated that contributing conditions in the actor’s death were end stage renal (kidney) disease, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol).
His remains were cremated and are being kept at a residence, per the certificate.
Miyahara’s death was previously confirmed to PEOPLE on Aug. 7.
Miyahara’s middle daughter, Pennie Cappasola, told PEOPLE that the actor died one day earlier, on Wednesday, Aug. 6, with his wife, Chiyo, by his side.
While there was no statement from the family, Cappasola said her father “loved working on Superstore.”
Miyahara’s NBC costar, Colton Dunn, was the first to share the news of his death in a social media post, with other costars following suit.
Dunn wrote, “John was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look. He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team.”
“It was an honor to know him and work with him,” Dunn continued. “I was lucky enough to meet some of his family and my thoughts are with them. Rest in Peace John.”
Superstore, a workplace sitcom about employees of a fictional store named Cloud 9, aired on NBC from 2015-2021.
According to Miyahara’s IMDb page, he appeared in 105 of the show’s 113 episodes during its six-season run.
The actor’s fellow costars flocked to the comment section of Dunn’s post to pay tribute.
“What an incredible man,” wrote Irene White, who played Carol.
Michael Bunin, who played Jeff, added, “I’m so sad to hear this news. Many fun days and many fun conversations. Very nice guy.”
Sierra Teller Ornelas, a writer and producer on Superstore, also shared her condolences. “Oh no, he was literally the sweetest man. Prayers up to his family and loved ones.”
