Julia Louis-Dreyfus Says She Was Recognized as Her Seinfeld Character While Giving Birth to Son: ‘So Awful’

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is looking back on an uncomfortable experience she had when giving birth to her older son.

On this week’s episode of her podcast, Wiser Than Me from Lemonada Media, the Veep alum, 63, spoke with celebrity chef Ina Garten, 76, about how audiences often think of them as their real friends. “I think particularly with television, with computer, I should say, I mean everybody’s watching it on all these other devices. But you’re in their home,” Louis-Dreyfus begins.

“I mean, you have that experience with your show, no doubt. You’re in their home so they feel relaxed with your presence,” she tells Garten, who adds, “And they feel like you’re a friend.”

“Correct. Which can be lovely, there is a downside to it though,” the comedian says, going on to share a story about a time she was recognized while about to give birth to her older son Henry, now 30.

“I was giving birth and when you’re in labor, they put that monitor around your tummy. And I was in the bathroom and I was naked and I had the thing around my tummy and I was massive, by the way. I gained like 50 pounds when I was pregnant,” the mom of two says.

“And I was standing there, and my water broke, and all of a sudden a nurse came into the room and I went, ‘My water broke!’ Ok, reminding you — naked. And she goes, ‘Elaine!’ It was so awful. Isn’t that crazy?”

Louis-Dreyfus shares her sons Henry and Charlie, 26, with longtime husband Brad Hall.

Last May, the actress opened up to PEOPLE about being a “momager” to her two sons, who are also pursuing careers in the acting industry.

“I’m a little bit of a momager,” the actress told PEOPLE with a laugh. “I mean, I’m happy helping them with auditions and reading scenes when they get hired. I’m very supportive and proud.”

Although she loves being a mother, Louis-Dreyfus said that parenting adult children can be “a tricky needle to thread.”

“I’m so grateful they’re out in the world and functioning, but it does require relinquishing a lot of control,” said the star. “It’s a slow process, but it’s equally joyful when a new dynamic comes into play as they become adults. I love hearing their opinions and watching what they do.”
