Kelly Clarkson Reimagines Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Please Please Please’ as a Crooning Country Song for Kellyoke

Please, please, please officially release this cover, Kelly Clarkson!
The 42-year-old Grammy winner performed a cover of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” during the Kellyoke segment of her NBC talk show on Wednesday, Nov. 13, reimagining the chart-topping hit as a crooning country song inspired by Dolly Parton.
“That was ‘Please Please Please’ by Sabrina Carpenter. It’s her first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, which I found shocking,” said Clarkson after singing the song with her band at the top of the episode. “I thought she would’ve had other ones, but I was like, ‘Well, that’s incredible!'”
The “Miss Independent” singer then explained the thought behind her countrified version of the track, produced by Jack Antonoff. “Ever since I heard this song, for some reason I hear Dolly Parton singing it as well,” she said.
“For some reason, it lends itself to country to me, so I asked my band if we could make more of a country version of it, ‘cause we have the amazing pop version already,” added Clarkson.
“But I love that song, and I love when a song is so good that you can kind of go into different genres with it,” she said. “But thank you, Sabrina, for that song, and thank you for letting me sing it.”
Released in June as the second single off Short n’ Sweet, Carpenter’s latest album, “Please Please Please” quickly reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song followed “Espresso,” which peaked at No. 3 on the chart.
Earlier this month, “Please Please Please” earned a Grammy Award nomination for song of the year.
Shortly after its initial release, Carpenter’s longtime friend Joey King spoke to PEOPLE about her love for the song. “I’m so happy for her and I just can’t stop singing ‘Please Please Please’ … get out of my head,” said the actress.
“It’s so rude of her to make a hit like that. It’s also so rude to make such an addicting music video,” she continues, referring to the music video starring Carpenter’s boyfriend, actor Barry Keoghan. ”It’s really rude to make me watch it six times at 2:00 a.m. when I want to go to bed.”
