Kenny Ortega is reminiscing about his time directing Descendants before the Disney Channel Original Movie’s 10th anniversary, and paying homage to the late Cameron Boyce.

The director and choreographer, 75, shared a video of Boyce opposite Sofia Carson and Dove Cameron in a dance rehearsal for the film’s “Rotten to the Core” number on Instagram on Wednesday, June 18.

“Coming up. . . Disney’s Descendants 10th Anniversary!!!” Ortega captioned the clip. “After all of these years it’s still setting it off 👊🏼💥All my love and a heap of thanks to our Cast, Crew, creative Team, Disney Channel, and to our devoted Fans around the world! 💜 #SetItOff #RottenToTheCore LOVE YOU CAM!!! 🤍 🕊️.”

The 2015 musical film followed the lives of the teenaged children of some of the Disney universe’s most iconic fairy-tale villains – including Cruella de Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar. The children of villains interact with the children of romantic heroes (including the daughters of Cinderella and Aurora, and the son of Prince Charming).

The characters are all forced to attend the same school at the wishes of the soon-to-be crowned King Ben (Mitchell Hope) , who selects four children of villains to join mainstream society. Boyce played Carlos, the son of Cruella de Vil (Wendy Raquel Robinson).

Boyce died in 2019 at 20, after a fatal seizure. His family confirmed at the time that he was diagnosed with epilepsy.

“The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him,” the Boyce family wrote in 2019. “We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother.“

Boyce starred in all three original Descendants films released in 2015, 2017 and 2019. A new group of characters was introduced in 2024’s Disney+ movie Descendants: The Rise of Red. Another film, Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, is expected to be released in 2026.
