Kristen Bell divulges ‘real-life’ marriage struggle with Dax Shepard amid backlash
Kristen Bell described a “real-life” struggle in her and Dax Shepard’s marriage that plays out on Season 2 of “Nobody Wants This.”
The actress, who recently celebrated their 12th anniversary with a controversial Instagram post, told People on Thursday that she is in an “opposites attract” relationship.
The Emmy nominee noted that her character, Joanne, is the same way with love interest Noah Roklo, played by Adam Brody.
“My advice to Joanne is just calm down a little bit,” Bell told the outlet. “I feel like she can get very amped up very quickly, and in order to take yourself from a ‘me’ to a ‘we,’ it requires a lot of patience.
“Having someone I feel that is very opposite from me is certainly something that I feel,” the “Gossip Girl” alum continued.
She clarified, “That doesn’t mean we couldn’t make it work, or didn’t want to make it work.”
Bell explained, “It just meant we did have to have a lot of patience for each other to figure out what the compromises would be, and a general understanding that we’re probably going to have different viewpoints on almost everything — and figure out a respectful way to have those discussions.”
The “Good Place” alum has been married to Shepard, 50, since October 2013.
The couple are the parents of daughters Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10.
To honor the “Hit & Run” co-stars’ anniversary on Friday, Bell posted a photo of herself in her partner’s lap, hugging him.
She wrote, “Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: ‘I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.’”
Many social media users bashed the caption, shared during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, as did advocacy group National Network to End Domestic Violence.
On Tuesday, a rep for the organization told Page Six, “There’s nothing funny about domestic violence ‘jokes’ that trivialize the very real fear, trauma and pain that millions of victims and survivors face each day.”
Bell, who skipped a “Today” show appearance the following day but did emerge on a red carpet Thursday, has yet to address the viral backlash.
She did, notably, limit Instagram comments on the post.
