Kumail Nanjiani says that Elon Musk wasn’t a fan of Silicon Valley.

On Monday, Aug. 11, Nanjiani, 47, joined Mike Birbiglia as a guest on his podcast Working It Out, where he talked about starring on the hit HBO comedy series.

At one point during the episode, Birbiglia, 47, asked if Nanjiani had ever met any of the big tech titans, including Musk. Nanjiani immediately confirmed, saying that the billionaire “didn’t like the show.”

He explained that when he met Musk, the Tesla CEO took issue with the series’ opening scene. “It’s such a funny opening,” Nanjiani began as he recalled the interaction with Musk, 54. The scene, he said, opens with Kid Rock playing at a tech party with “seven nerdy dudes standing there, and nobody’s paying attention.”

“Elon was upset,” Nanjiani said. “He was like, ‘Well, the parties I go to are much cooler than these parties.’ ”

The actor quipped, “It was like, ‘Yeah, man. You’re one of the richest people in the world. We’re like losers on the show. Of course, your parties are better than my parties. What are you talking about?’ ”

During Nanjiani and Birbiglia’s conversation, Nanjiani also recalled when he met Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He noted that around the third or fourth year of the series, he and costar Martin Starr presented at the Breakthrough Awards, which Zuckerberg co-founded in 2016.

But during the ceremony, Nanjiani and Starr, 43, decided to change their presentation speech, making a callback to a NSFW moment from the season 1 finale of the show. Their reworked joke for the crowd was met with silence.

“He was like, ‘What the f— was that?’ ” Nanjiani recalled of Zuckerberg’s reaction.

“And truly in that moment he was right,” the actor added.

Nanjiani starred as Dinesh Chugtai in the Emmy-winning series, which satirized Silicon Valley culture and followed the group behind fictional company Pied Piper.

The series launched in 2014 earned a total of 40 Emmy nominations, including five consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. The HBO hit took home two wins: Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Art Direction for a Contemporary Program (Half hour or less).

In addition to Nanjiani, Silicon Valley starred Starr, Thomas Middleditch, Zach Woods, Josh Brener and T.J. Miller.
