Matthew McConaughey name-dropped Jennifer Lopez to get out of ‘major mess’ in Mexico
Matthew McConaughey got loud.
The actor name-dropped Jennifer Lopez, his “Wedding Planner” co-star, during a “major mess-up in Mexico,” he confessed on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast Thursday.
“I’m crossing the border, going way down south, and I get pulled over,” the 56-year-old told listeners. “It’s one of those pullovers where they noticed me.”
McConaughey quipped that since he is a “gringo in a … nice truck,” he got “that dress down” and thought, “Oh geez, get the wallet out. Here we go.”
As the interaction “was going down,” the Golden Globe winner asked, “You guys know Jennifer Lopez? Ever seen ‘Wedding Planner?’”
The “True Detective” alum remembered, “They were like, ‘Oh!’ They went off. We end up taking pictures together, and they let me go.”
While McConaughey did not specify when the traffic stop took place, his and Lopez’s movie rom com came out in January 2001.
The duo reunited via Instagram Live in 2021 for the film’s 20th anniversary, with Lopez raving over how much she “so enjoyed working with” McConaughey.
“We had such a nice rapport and chemistry,” she gushed. “We were somewhat at the beginning of our careers at that time. It was exciting to be working on any movie. I still feel that way. It was a magical time.”
McConaughey, for his part, said, “I love your intentionality, I love how deliberate you are. You would have it down.”
He went on to praise the “Let’s Get Loud” singer, 57, in a 2024 interview with People.
“I’ve never seen someone be able to choreograph something so cleanly and clearly and actually hit the coordination of that scene,” the Oscar winner explained, dubbing Lopez “a worker.”
He noted, “She knows what she wants to do, and she does what she needs to do to pull off what she wants to do.”
Elsewhere in Thursday’s podcast episode, McConaughey dished on another of his hit movies from the early aughts — “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” opposite Kate Hudson, which came out in February 2003.
He called the project “the gift that keeps on giving” as it has earned him the most residuals of any movie “by far.”
