Matty Healy Consoles Mom Denise Welch 1 Week After Her Controversial Taylor Swift Comments

Matty Healy was spotted in the midst of an emotional conversation with his mom Denise Welch, just one week after she made headlines for slamming his ex, Taylor Swift.

In a video filmed on Thursday, July 31 and published via TMZ the following day, the 1975 frontman could be seen appearing to console his mother while she was in tears.

The footage showed the musician, 36, sitting on a curb with the U.K. talk show host, 67, outside a restaurant in West Hollywood.

Welch was visibly emotional in the clip, dabbing her eyes with a tissue as she cried, while Healy looked serious as he spoke to her. The video also showed Healy and Welch hugging during the seemingly emotional interaction. According to TMZ, Healy was reportedly consoling Welch over a “family matter.”

The interaction comes a week after Welch made candid comments about her son’s past relationship with pop superstar Swift during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.

Cohen, 57, asked Welch what she thought of Swift’s album, The Tortured Poets Department, which is rumored to be inspired by Healy. In response, the former soap star was surprisingly blunt while sharing her views.

“Obviously on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but not being her mother-in-law is a role that I’m glad that I lost,” Welch admitted.

After the audience gasped at the comments, she quickly followed up with, “Not that I have anything against her at all. It was just — it was tricky.”

Welch also called out Swift, 35, for having the freedom to touch on her relationships via her music, while her romantic partners seemingly don’t have the same ability to share their side without facing public backlash.

“Listen, you’re not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album, you know, about it,” Welch continued. “But Matty has taken it all in completely good grace. He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée, Gabriella, Gabbriette, who is gorgeous.”

Welch concluded, “And so, we’ve moved on.”

Healy and Swift were romantically linked in 2023, although both musicians have remained relatively private when it comes to sharing details about the nature of the relationship.

Both Healy and Swift have since left their relationship in the past and have moved on with their respective love lives. While Healy is engaged to Gabriette, Swift has been dating NFL star Travis Kelce since summer 2023.
