Meghan Markle and ‘furious’ Edward Enninful ended friendship over British Vogue cover debacle: report

Meghan Markle’s social circle shrunk — over a British Vogue cover.
The Duchess of Sussex reportedly has ended her long-term friendship with ex-British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful after she was snubbed from the magazine in September 2022.
The duo disagreed over how Markle’s charitable work would be highlighted, according to the Daily Mail.
“The duchess and her team had high expectations and were expecting she might get a print cover or at least a digital cover out of it, but Enninful was not able to meet those expectations,” the outlet claimed Saturday.
Enninful, 53, “already had a magazine cover in the bag for that month” — model Linda Evangelista and tennis star Serena Williams for the British and American versions of the magazine, respectively.
The journalist was allegedly “furious” over the “very difficult” debacle with Markle.
“Edward could only promise her a big showy feature inside the magazine and online — but she turned it down,” Condé Nast insiders alleged to the Daily Mail over the weekend.
However, the Post heard Monday that Markle and Enninful still maintain a “warm and respectful” bond and recently exchanged birthday wishes and flowers.
Markle and Enninful’s reps did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
The former actress became friends with Enninful in 2019 when she guest-edited British Vogue.
At the time, the stylist explained why Markle was not on the cover.
“In the end, she felt that it would be in some ways a ‘boastful’ thing to do for this particular project,” he wrote of the “Forces for Change”-themed issues. “She wanted, instead, to focus on the women she admires.”
The “Deal or No Deal” alum did appear in a photo inside the issue wearing a Gucci dress.
The following year, Enninful gushed about his “brave” pal to Sky News while discussing her and Prince Harry’s exit from the royal family.
He said in 2020 that Markle was given “very unfair” treatment during her time in England, noting, “Parts of it were probably racism, but it was more of an institution.”
She was, however, noticeably absent from last year’s cover marking Enninful’s departure from Vogue after nearly seven years.
Oprah Winfrey, Williams and 38 more women appeared in the epic group shot in March 2024.
“It’s been an extraordinary ride and an absolute honor,” Enninful wrote of his decision to step down.
