Meghan Markle: ‘I’m missing my babies’ on Mother’s Day during Nigerian tour with Prince Harry

Meghan Markle admitted she was missing her children on Mother’s Day.

The Duchess of Sussex celebrated the holiday in Nigeria this year while she and husband Prince Harry were on a three-day tour of the African country to promote mental health for soldiers.

“Today is Mother’s Day [in America],” Markle, 42, said during a speech at the Lagos State Government House on Sunday. “So it feels appropriate that although of course we are missing our children, I’m missing my babies, it feels very appropriate to be in the motherland and amongst family.”

Back in the US, the couple’s two children – Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 2 – were taken care of at their home in Montecito, Calif.

The “Suits” alum revealed on her “Archetypes” podcast in October 2022 that through a DNA test, she discovered that she was “43 percent Nigerian.”

Markle was also honored with a naming ceremony and received a handwoven Nigerian fabric during the trip abroad.

Harry, 39, also spoke at the event on Sunday, calling those gathered his “in laws” during his speech.

“I’ll skip the protocol because at this point we’re all family. Thank you for welcoming my wife and myself to Nigeria,” he said, noting that it was their “first visit” but “certainly” wouldn’t be their last.

“Thank you for the naming ceremony. I don’t know how I got dragged into that as well, but to be able to witness it as well next to my wife, it means a huge amount to both of us but especially her, so thank you for that.”

Markle received some belated Mother’s Day wishes on Monday when she visited the Ilupeju Senior Grammar School to see the work of the Giants of Africa charity.

The organization’s Vice-Chairman and President, ex-NBA star Masai Ujiri, addressed Markle and his own wife, saying, “I want to wish you a happy, happy Mother’s Day.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were there to unveil a partnership between their Archewell Foundation and the Giants of Africa, which uses sports, especially basketball, to empower and inspire young people.

Markle requested that no one ask her to try and shoot a basketball, calling her husband “the athletic one.”

Meanwhile, Harry praised the Giants of Africa charity, calling their work “truly amazing.”

“The power of sport can change lives,” he exclaimed. “It brings people together and creates community and there are no barriers which is the most important thing.”

Harry then took to the court to show off his basketball skills, expertly scoring a basket at one point.
