The former costars reunited for dinner recently, as documented by Fox, 64, via his Instagram on Sunday, March 8.

“Dining with my bestie at the beach. Next year BTTF is 41. Great Scott. Chris will be 8️⃣8️⃣. That’s some serious s***,” the actor captioned a snap of him and Lloyd, 87, smiling as they had dinner together.

Lloyd commented, “Man, that’s heavy,” as well as a red heart emoji.

“Great Scott!” Back to the Future debuted in theaters in July 1985 — and has been a major pop culture staple ever since. Michael J. Fox stars as teenager Marty McFly, who travels back in time from 1985 to 1955 with eccentric scientist Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and meets his parents as high school […]

It’s been nearly 41 years since Fox and Lloyd made movie history as Marty McFly and eccentric scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown, respectively. Back to the Future was released in July 1985 and spawned two hit sequels, released in 1989 and 1990.

Last year, Fox reflected on the iconic movie’s 40th anniversary with the publication of his bestselling memoir, Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum.

In the book, Fox detailed how he was cast as Marty after production had already gotten underway with another actor in his role: Eric Stoltz. The part was recast during filming.

“In the initial weeks of writing this book, I sent an email to Eric Stoltz, asking if he would be interested in talking to me about his Back to the Future experience,” Fox wrote. “Eric has maintained his silence on the subject for forty years, so I was prepared for the likelihood that he’d prefer to keep it that way. ‘If your answer is ‘piss off and leave me alone,’ I wrote, ‘that works, too.’”

“His beautifully written reply began, ‘Piss off and leave me alone!’ Thankfully, this was followed by ‘I jest …’ Eric was thoughtful about my outreach, and although he respectfully declined to participate in the book, he seemed open to the idea of getting together in New York City,” Fox continued. “Despite toiling in the same business and traveling in similar circles, Eric and I had never met. Or so I thought.”

Fox wrote that Stoltz visited him at home and the pair “immediately fell into an easy dialogue about our careers, families and yes, our own trips through the space-time continuum.”

“He entered with a smile, and we quickly acknowledged that neither of us had an issue with the other,” Fox said of their first meeting. “What transpired on Back to the Future had not made us enemies or fated rivals; we were just two dedicated actors who had poured equal amounts of energy into the same role. The rest had nothing to do with us.”

Since their initial meeting, the veteran actors have kept up their correspondence.

“His emails are reliably witty and always fun to read. It’s a reminder that some of the best parts of our future can come from the past,” Fox wrote. “One more gift from the year 1985.”
