Michelle Williams and Thomas Kail had a date night to die for.

The actress, 44, and the Tony-winning stage director, 48, stepped out together for the New York City premiere at SVA Theater of FX and Hulu’s dramedy Dying for Sex, in which Williams will star in the leading role. Williams wore a chic lavender chiffon gown, while Kail opted for a classic black silhouette.

Williams and Kail married in 2020, after initially meeting on the set of the FX limited series Fosse/Vernon in 2018. Williams starred as Gwen Verdon, while Kail was a producer and director on the project.

Williams was previously married to musician Phil Everum for a year before their divorce in 2019. She also shares a daughter, Matilda Ledger, 19, with the late Heath Ledger. Kail was previously married to actress Angela Christian from 2006 to 2019. Williams and Kail have two children together.

Williams’ breakout performance was her role as Jen Lindley in the WB’s (now the CW) hit teen soap Dawson’s Creek. In the years following the 2003 finale, Williams continued to star in prestige films, and earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain in 2005.

Dying for Sex will follow a woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer on a journey to reclaim her sexuality post-divorce while battling the illness. The show is based on the Wondery podcast of the same name, and will also be produced by three-time Emmy winner Nikki Boyer.

Boyer initially launched the podcast in 2020, to help tell her best friend Molly’s story. Molly, like the upcoming Hulu show’s protagonist, left an unhappy marriage in pursuit of sexual experimentation and “feeling alive,” per the program’s official Wondery page. Jenny Slate also stars as a character based on Boyer.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE on the red carpet Wednesday, Williams said the story’s central relationship – the friendship between Molly and Nikki – made her think “even more deeply on how important” her female friends are.

As for building chemistry with Slate, Williams said it was “super easy.”

“It was really not a construction project. It was just like a sort of falling into each other kind of thing,” Williams told PEOPLE.

In an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Williams said that portraying this character “taught her a lot.”

The series also stars Sissy Spacek, Rob Delaney, Esco Jouley, David Rasche and Jay Duplass. Dying for Sex premieres on Hulu Friday, April 4.
