Mike Tyson Reveals What He Learned from Loss to Jake Paul Ahead of Floyd Mayweather Fight (Exclusive)

As Mike Tyson prepares to fight fellow boxing legend Floyd Mayweather next spring, the 59-year-old icon is reflecting on his most recent loss to YouTube star Jake Paul.

Tyson, who lost to Paul, 28, in a unanimous decision after eight rounds last November, tells PEOPLE he “couldn’t believe” that his upcoming fight with Mayweather, 48, was a reality until his opponent signed the card.

“He signed it, so I believe it,” says Tyson.

The boxing star says he will address “things that happened during my first fight with Jake” and his “ideology about all that” in his upcoming one-man-show “Return of the Mike” when the show begins in November.

“It’s going to be really interesting. I can’t believe, since the last time I did this, I’ve fought… What? Two times, going on three times…I’ll do better in the next one,” he promises.

Tyson says his biggest takeaway from the fight with Paul in November was that he lacked the right mental focus, and going forward he hopes to “just enjoy the moment” in his next match.

“This moment’s going to be over,” he says, advising, “Just enjoy it, it doesn’t last forever.”

As for his preparation ahead of meeting Mayweather in the ring next year, Tyson shares a vague approach. “I’m just preparing, and looking forward. It’s just a wonderful thing that could happen,” he says.

In a press release announcing his fight with Tyson, Mayweather said, “I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and there hasn’t been a single fighter that can tarnish my legacy. You already know that if I am going to do something, it’s going to be big and it’s going to be legendary. I’m the best in the business of boxing. This exhibition will give the fans what they want.”

Tyson called the match “something neither the world nor I ever thought would or could happen” in a statement to BBC after the news broke, adding, “However, boxing has entered a new era of the unpredictable and this fight is as unpredictable as it gets.”

The match will happen sometime next spring, according to ESPN and BBC, and is being put on by SCI Sports/Fight Sports.

After his loss to Paul, Tyson revealed he “blanked out a little” during the match, and he doesn’t “remember the fight that much,” in an interview with Covino & Rich on Fox Sports.

“I remember coming back from the first round and Jake is doing some kind of…I don’t know what he was doing,” Tyson continued, mimicking Paul’s bow in the ring. “And that’s the last thing I remember,” he shared.

“The day after I woke up and said to my wife, ‘Why did I do that?’ I just don’t know what the hell was going on,” added Tyson, who has been married to Lahika Spicer since 2009.
