Mormon Wives’ Layla Addresses Ongoing ‘Toxic’ Coparenting Relationship, Reveals If She’s Still With Mason (Exclusive)
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Layla Taylor opened up about finding love with boyfriend Mason McWhorter while still juggling a difficult coparenting relationship with her ex-husband.
Before Hulu released season 3 of the show on Thursday, November 13, Layla, 24, spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about her thoughts on getting married again.
“[I am taking it] day by day. Marriage scares me right now,” she admitted. “But I think it’s because I’m so jaded from my ex-husband and that marriage.”
Layla noted that she is “still dealing with a toxic coparenting relationship” with ex-husband Clayton Wessel “to this day.”
“Right now, I’m kind of scared of marriage but I just want to get to know somebody very well before I even consider that,” she explained. “I’m just happy and content where me and Mason are. And if somehow that ever were to come up, then we would see.”
Viewers caught a glimpse at the new man in Layla’s life when cameras picked back up on the hit reality series. For some fans, Mason might look familiar considering he’s the brother of Layla’s ex Chase McWhorter.
“We just laugh about it. I know it’s not the most ideal situation, dating brothers, but sometimes life gives you lemons,” Layla shared about the connection. “You just have to make lemonade and it is what it is. It makes funny, awkward situations sometimes. But we just make light of it because there’s no avoiding it.”
Layla was grateful to find Mason when she did.
“We are still together. Things are going really great. I’m really happy,” she gushed. “He’s just my best friend. I feel like me and him just get along really well. We have a lot of similarities and our relationship just feels very natural and not forced. I don’t have to pretend to be somebody that I’m not with him.”
After leaving the Mormon church, Layla told Us she’s on the same page with Mason about their values, adding, “Luckily for me, he is not active anymore. We are aligned on that. We both have Mormon upbringings but we’re not a part — not an active member of the church anymore.”
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, which premiered in September 2024, introduced Us to a group of Mormon mom influencers in Utah. While most tuned in for the drama, viewers have since come back season after season to check in on the cast.
Layla’s personal life was explored more in season 3 as she navigated life as a Black woman in Utah, which is predominantly white. Off screen, Layla is a devoted mother to sons, Ollie, 4, and Maxwell, 3, whom she prefers not to feature on the show.
“That’s the one thing that me and their dad agree on is that we want to keep them away from this world and protect them. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to show your kids at all. I think that some of the women on the show do and I think that’s amazing,” she told Us. “Whatever you’re comfortable with. But I just, personally, can’t control who’s watching things. I can’t control what people are doing with the content that I share and that scares me.”
Layla continued: “I feel like we live in a very weird and gross world sometimes. Some people are just … they don’t have their minds straight. I just feel like I want to protect them and me and their dad have always agreed on that, which is good. But our relationship is hard.”
The reality star acknowledged the “bitter feelings from his end” toward her.
“I just have to remind myself that every day — when we’re in another argument or something — that with time, it’s going to get better. Because I know what it’s like to have parents that do not like each other,” she continued. “That was my parents growing up and it affected me a lot. That’s what I try to remind him [of] every day. I’m like, ‘Hey, I know this is hard and I know sometimes you don’t want to talk to me. But I know what it’s like to see parents not be able to even get along for the kids. So we need to get this figured out.’ So one day, I’m hoping [we get to a better place].”
Layla had a similar hopeful outlook going into season 3 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.
“I just wanted to be more vocal in season 3. I feel like season 1 and season 2, the audience could definitely see that there’s times that I couldn’t speak up when I was in certain situations. I was definitely a lot more reserved,” she recalled. “My goal going into season 3 was to say what’s on my mind, stand up for myself more and just be more authentic to who I am as a person. I feel like I definitely portrayed that really well this season, which I’m proud of myself for.”
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is currently streaming on Hulu.
