Can you believe it’s been five years since Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” came out?

In honor of the chart-topping hit song’s fifth anniversary, Rodrigo, 22, shared a new cover of “Drivers License” performed by David Byrne on Thursday, Jan. 8 and spoke about making the ballad in a pair of reflective posts on Instagram.

Byrne’s take on the song features different production and flips some of the lyrics to reflect his perspective as a 73-year-old man. “And you’re probably with that blond boy / The one that always made me doubt / He’s so much younger than me / Everything I’m insecure about,” he sings on the cover.

Rodrigo noted Byrne’s version of “Drivers License” is the first of multiple reworked tracks to come from her Sour album, which “is turning 5 years old this year,” she wrote on Instagram. “and to celebrate, i’m so excited to announce an upcoming series of reimagined SOUR covers from some of my favorite artists ever.”

“we’re starting off insanely strong with an incredible reworking of ‘drivers license’ from one of my all-time heroes, David Byrne,” she continued. “David is nothing short of a legend and I actually cried when I heard his version of this song.”

The Talking Heads member’s “Drivers License” cover is available now to stream, or fans can purchase a 7-inch vinyl featuring his version of the song as well as the two artists’ performance of “Burning Down the House” at the 2025 Governors Ball Music Festival in N.Y.C.

“I’m stoked!! Go give it a listen,” added Rodrigo, who also released a Target-exclusive tiny vinyl pressing of the original “Drivers License” and her live performance of the hit at Governors Ball.

“Drivers License” was released in January 2021 as the lead single off Sour. Aided by speculation the song’s lyrics were about a love triangle between Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua Bassett, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — and spent eight consecutive weeks in the top slot.

The song won Rodrigo a Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance as well as two MTV Video Music Awards for Song of the Year and Push Performance of the Year.

In another Instagram post, Rodrigo shared photos from around the release of “Drivers License” and wished the song a happy fifth anniversary. “looking back at these pics I feel like I look like a baby but it also feels like just yesterday lol,” she began the post’s caption.

“his song has totally changed my life in ways I still can’t totally wrap my head around,” continued Rodrigo. “I’m forever grateful for this magical chapter and I can’t wait to scream red lights stop signs with u guys at every concert I play for the rest of my life! happy birthday DL.”
