One Chicago’s Frost and Novak Romance Sparks Crossovers, ‘Twists and Turns’ for Violet and Vasquez (Exclusive)
There have been many love stories within the One Chicago universe, but Frost and Novak’s budding romance will bring even more crossovers than ever before — with some drama thrown in for good measure.
“A bit of a love triangle [will be] playing out here in the next, you know, five or six episodes,” Chicago Med showrunner Allen MacDonald exclusively told Us Weekly as the show returned in January from its midseason break.
During the fall finale for Chicago Med, which aired in November 2025, fans saw a spark between Dr. John Frost (Darren Barnet) and Chicago Fire’s paramedic Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) after Dr. Naomi Howard (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) seemingly missed her chance to go out with her coworker.
While Allen played coy about whether Naomi has a chance to win over Frost, he confirmed that Frost’s romantic story line will “involve a recurring guest star who’s crossed over from another show,” for the remainder of the season.
Allen initially teased Frost’s love interest to Us, saying, “I don’t want to say any names,” before confirming Novak will be coming back and forth between Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.
The showrunner also revealed that Chicago Fire fans will get to see Frost crossover to that show as well — as love isn’t one sided (or confined to one show).
“It won’t just be in one direction. Will be in both directions,” Allen said, noting Frost and Novak’s connection “will be covered on both shows.”
Chicago Fire executive producer Reza Tabrizi exclusively told Us last month that their writer’s room is just as excited to see the crossover love story play out. However, he said Novak’s feelings for Frost may cause issues with paramedic Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) and firefighter Sal Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente).
Tabrizi explained, “The dynamic of Novak and Vasquez now with Frost involved — and obviously what happened in the fall finale with Vasquez and Violet, and how they, by default, ended up in close proximity, and didn’t want to stop drinking for the night — that is something that they’ll [explore] more.”
He teased, “There’s a lot of twists and turns,” revealing the group dynamic is “going to be interesting to see.”
During Chicago Fire’s fall finale in November 2025, Vasquez was surprised outside the firehouse by his criminal father, who was released from jail without any notice. After his dad took his car back, Vasquez was left without a ride home, so Violet volunteered to take him.
The pair, however, didn’t end up going home. Instead, they went out drinking and appeared to start catching feelings.
As Chicago Fire fans know, Vasquez and Novak already had their own flirtatious connection, which could prove messy now that he and Violet are getting closer — and Novak is spending more time with Frost.
When asked whether there could be a “love square” happening, Tabrizi told Us, “It seems that way.”
He added that as the seasons unfold, “that element” and “dynamic” between all four One Chicago characters will be explored.
“How that dynamic brings its own challenges is something that’s going to be interesting to see,” Tabrizi concluded.
Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. are on NBC Wednesdays at 8 p.m., 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET.
