‘Paradise’ fans react to Shailene Woodley’s character’s death
Warning: Spoilers ahead! Do not proceed unless you’ve watched the latest episode of “Paradise.”
“Paradise” fans are fuming over the death of Shailene Woodley’s character.
During the latest episode of the hit Hulu show, Annie (Woodley) gave birth to a baby girl and then died while she and Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) were on their journey to Atlanta to find Xavier’s wife, Teri (Enuka Okuma).
Annie, a medical student, was suffering from preeclampsia and succumbed to severe postpartum bleeding after going into premature labor.
Before she died, Annie instructed Xavier to bring her daughter to her father, Link (Thomas Doherty).
The death enraged viewers online, with many taking to social media to weigh in on the controversial decision.
“They really killed Annie on #ParadiseSeason2 ? That sh-t just pissed me off so bad! Wtf,” one fan wrote on X.
Another fan tweeted, “WE JUST MET ANNIE NOOO I WAS ROOTING FOR HER SINCE EPISODE 1 YOU CANT JUST KILL HER.”
“Oh they ain’t have to do Annie like that,” a different viewer said.
“Annie survived being alone her whole life, survived a freaking apocalypse, ONLY die of childbirth. What the hell is this show,” a fourth fan wrote.
Someone else tweeted, “Raise your hand if you were personally victimized by #Paradise killing off Annie.”
Another fan said their “jaw has been on the floor for a few minutes” after watching the episode.
“I absolutely in a million years would never have expected that Annie would die,” the viewer added.
Woodley, 34, joined the cast of “Paradise” Season 2 only for her character to be killed off in the fourth episode.
During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Woodley said that creator Dan Fogelman warned her about her character’s tragic fate.
“I knew how many episodes and I knew what was going to happen [in broad strokes] — I knew that she was going to get pregnant. I knew that she was going to give birth, and I knew that she was going to pass away,” she said.
“But I didn’t know exactly how that was going to look, and what the timeline was going to be, until I read episode four.”
The “Big Little Lies” star also said that Annie’s death scene “was so profoundly and poignantly written, that reading it in and of itself evoked every emotion that we needed to bring it alive on the day.”
While speaking to Decider, Woodley admitted that she was “utterly exhausted” after filming the birth and death scene.
“We gave all of ourselves, and our director really allowed us to have the space,” she explained. “We spent some time choreographing and rehearsing the scene, so we knew physically where our bodies would be in space.”
Despite the plot twist, Woodley said she’s hopeful this isn’t the end of Annie on “Paradise.”
“I would love that. I would really, really love that,” the actress said when asked about a potential return in the future. “The joke I would always say was, ‘Thank god it’s a Dan Fogelman show,’ because he does tend to bring people back over and over again.”
New episodes of “Paradise” drop Mondays on Hulu.
