  • The Phantom of the Opera will return — somewhat — to Broadway after ending its run two years ago
  • The Phantom-inspired Masquerade will run later this year
  • A film adaptation, directed by Joel Schumacher, was released in 2004 starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum

The Phantom of the Opera is returning to Broadway — with a few tweaks.

Just two years since the famed musical shuttered on the Great White Way, it appears the haunting notes of Andrew Lloyd Webber will once again enchant audiences.

A few changes are in store, starting with the production’s name — Masquerade — which takes inspiration from one of the musical’s most elaborate dance sequences.

Furthermore, the production will not return to its home at the Majestic Theater. Instead, the show will enchant audiences on West 57th Street in the old Lee’s Art Shop building.

Additionally, an Instagram account for the play is live, featuring images in black and red along with quotes from the Tony-winning musical – such as “Sing once again with me.”

Broadway’s The Phantom of the Opera was Broadway’s longest-running show and took its final bow on Feb. 18, 2023, following a 35th anniversary celebration on Jan. 26.

“The Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group’s Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Harold Prince – the longest-running show in Broadway history – is confirmed to play its final 5 months,” a rep for the show told PEOPLE in a statement.

As for London’s West End production, it has yet to stop dropping its chandelier since opening in 1986.

A film adaptation, directed by Joel Schumacher, was released in 2004 starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum.

While a specific run date has not been specified for Masquerade, it is expected to run later this year.
