Prison Break is coming back.

In December 2024, a pilot of the Prison Break reboot was picked up by Hulu, Deadline reported. Though it will be set in the same world as the original, the series will feature a whole new story — and follow a whole new cast of morally ambiguous characters.

In June 2025, Variety reported a slate of new faces that will join the show, including Ray McKinnon and Margo Martindale.

Premiering in 2005, the original Fox Prison Break series followed Michael Scofield’s (Wentworth Miller) elaborate escape plan to save his brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) from death row and prove his innocence. The show ran for four seasons before concluding in 2009.

12 days after the series finale, the network aired a made-for-TV movie, The Final Break, to wrap up the storylines. Miller and Purcell also starred in a fifth season, which aired on Fox in 2017.

So what will the Prison Break reboot focus on? Here’s everything to know about the Prison Break reboot — including what the original cast has said about returning.

What is the Prison Break reboot about?

Details about the reboot series’ plot haven’t been revealed yet. But Variety reported in March 2025 that the show will feature a new story with new characters written by Elgin James.

James is also executive producing the reboot alongside Marty Adelstein, Neal Moritz and Paul Scheuring, who created the original Prison Break series.

Who is in the cast of the Prison Break reboot?

Emily Browning, Lukas Gage and Drake Rodger have been cast as series regulars, per Variety.

Browning plays ex-soldier Cassidy Collins, who takes a job as a corrections officer at one of the “deadliest prisons in America,” while Gage plays Jackson, a politician from a “well-to-do background” in the midst of his first congressional campaign. Rodger plays Tommy, an inmate at the prison who has been incarcerated for a decade.

Rodger announced the news on his Instagram, writing that he was “beyond grateful to be a part of the universe.”

A few other notable names have been cast in guest star roles. McKinnon will play private investigator Joe Dahl, who’s working a decade-old murder, and Martindale will play the prison’s warden, Jessica Strand.

Donal Logue has also been cast as Holt Keane, a grieving father, and Lili Taylor plays Carole Mullen, a mother who’s “committed to finding the truth,” per Variety

Will the original stars return for the Prison Break reboot?

Hulu has not confirmed if any original Prison Break stars will reprise their roles in the reboot. In 2020, Miller told his Instagram followers that he was “officially” stepping away from the Prison Break world because he no longer wished to play straight characters. (The actor came out as gay in 2013.)

“I just don’t want to play straight characters,” he wrote in a post. “Their stories have been told (and told). So. No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.”

He continued, “If you’re hot and bothered bec you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one… That’s your work.”

Where is the Prison Break reboot being filmed?

The pilot of the Prison Break spinoff series is being shot at a former state penitentiary in Moundsville, W. Va., per the Herald-Star. The West Virginia Penitentiary is a gothic-style prison that was built in 1866 and decommissioned in 1995.

It remains open to the public as a tourist attraction, offering historic tours, paranormal investigations, escape rooms and haunted houses, according to its website. Filming began on June 6, 2025.

When will the Prison Break reboot be released?

Hulu has not revealed a Prison Break reboot release date.

Where can I watch the original Prison Break?

All five seasons of Prison Break are available to stream on Netflix.
