Queen Camilla stars in new crime thriller

Queen Camilla has a new title.

The royal appears in “The Hawk is Dead” by one of her favorite authors — bestselling writer Peter James — as part of his popular Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series.

The novel opens with the Queen aboard the royal train on the way to an engagement when it derails and is followed by an explosion that kills Camilla’s private secretary, Sir Peregrine Greaves.

The Queen begins to question whether she was the actual target and becomes an amateur sleuth.

According to the publishers, the plot also includes real-life events — such as the renovation of Buckingham Palace — and layers “in suspense over rare artworks and priceless objects from the Royal Collection,” per People magazine.

Camilla has long been a champion of literacy and reading.

In 2023, she launched The Queen’s Reading Room, a charity “working to celebrate and promote the power and benefits of reading in the UK and beyond.”

The website notes that “only one in two UK adults reads a book in a year” and they “want to change that.”

The site also includes four favorite books that the Queen has read in each season.

Recent book recommendations have included “Suite Française” by Irène Némirovsky, “The Woman in White” by Wilkie Collins, and “Dracula” by Bram Stoker.

Princess Kate has also championed literacy.

In 2023, she took part in a special on-camera reading of the children’s book, “The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark,” on the BBC’s CBeebies show.
