‘Queer Eye’ star Tan France reveals he cut his hair after reading fan comments: ‘Didn’t realize they hated it so much’

Pompadour no more.

In an exclusive interview with Page Six’s “Virtual Reali-Tea,” “Queer Eye” star Tan France reveals he chopped off his iconic silver coif after looking at online comments this season — something he’s consciously avoided throughout his tenure on the Netflix series.

“I would love to say it’s because I just fancied a change,” he says of his new look while promoting the upcoming “Queer Eye: Fab Five Live!” tour, noting that he cut his hair on Dec. 24, just before the new year.

“But really, what sparked it was I did something that I try really hard not to do — which is I looked at comments about myself after the new season,” France elaborates.

“Because every time a new season comes out, I just want to know that the audience is enjoying the show and [if I did] something on that season that they didn’t love, maybe I’ll correct it the following season.”

But the style expert never expected to discover negative feedback about his signature salt-and-pepper pompadour.

“I saw so many people hate my hair. And I thought, ‘Oh, I didn’t realize they hated [it] so much. So maybe I’ll try something [new] while I’m still “relatively” young,’” explains the 41-year-old. “So that’s why I changed it.”

France says he thought he had “developed a thick skin” during his time in the public eye, but realized that criticism from strangers still stings. However, he feels “better” with his new, shorter ‘do — and is delighted that it seems to better reflect his easygoing personality. 

“I do feel better with this hair. It’s amazing what [the comments] did for me,” the “Selling Sunset” reunion host says. “The response was basically, ‘That hair made you seem like you’re really uptight, but you’re not.’”

France continues, “I can’t believe that my hair made people think that I was that uptight. It was just … I’ve had that same hair for 15 years. It was just easy for me to do … I could do my hair in literally two to three minutes maximum. But apparently people thought I spent an hour on my hair.”

The TV personality says fans will see more of his carefree side when the “Queer Eye: Fab Five Live!” tour — moderated by comedian Michelle Collins — kicks off Feb. 19 in Philadelphia at the Miller Theater. 

“The cast will tell you, if ever you get to meet the other four, they’ll tell you I’m a f—king clown,” he says of his onstage chemistry with co-stars Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski and Jeremiah Brent. 

“I don’t take anything seriously, I play all day. You will never see me serious. You can tell me something shocking and I don’t take it [seriously]. People have to remind me, ‘This is a really serious situation, you need to calm the s—t down.’ I will be playful, I am a performing monkey.”
