Reese Witherspoon Says David Fincher Gave Her ‘an Ego Check’ When He Told Her She Was ‘Totally Wrong’ for Gone Girl
NEED TO KNOW
- Reese Witherspoon is recalling “an ego check” moment back when director David Fincher told her she was “totally wrong” for the part of Amy Elliott Dunne in 2014’s Gone Girl
- Eventually, she realized he “was totally right,” adding of the finished product, “Fincher just killed it, and Rosamund Pike is so diabolical”
- Based on Gillian Flynn’s 2012 bestselling novel of the same name, the thriller costarred Ben Affleck as Amy’s husband, Nick Dunne
Reese Witherspoon is opening up about being told she was “totally wrong” for a role she wanted.
During a conversation on the Las Culturistas podcast that aired Wednesday, Sept. 17, the Oscar winner revealed that she “was supposed to star in” Gone Girl, the 2014 psychological thriller she co-produced based on the 2012 bestselling novel by Gillian Flynn (who also wrote the movie’s script).
But what actually ended up happening, according to Witherspoon, 49, is that “[Director David Fincher] sat me down — and this is not on David, but David’s like, ‘You’re totally wrong for this part, and I’m not putting you in it.’ ”
The part was of Amy Elliott Dunne, which eventually went to Rosamund Pike. Pike, 46, starred opposite Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, Amy’s husband who goes on a dead-end-riddled search to find his wife after she goes missing.

“I had all these conversations with the writer Gillian Flynn, and she was like, ‘No, I’d really like you to do it,’ ” Witherspoon said of the part, adding of Fincher, 63, “But he was like, ‘You’re wrong.’”
And while the Legally Blonde actress was taken aback at first, she said it was “an ego check for me.” But eventually, she realized, “He was totally right.”
“Fincher just killed it, and Rosamund Pike is so diabolical and Ben Affleck is sort of the rube on the other side of it,” Witherspoon added.
Not that Witherspoon is short on work. She has starred in multiple films over the last few years, including Your Place or Mine (2013) and You’re Cordially Invited (2025), and her hit Apple TV+ series The Morning Show is currently airing its fourth season.
As for the other side of her screen career, “Producing also means get out of the way when you’re supposed to,” the Hello Sunshine founder said on Las Culturistas. “Do your job to promote, continue to pull people together, continue to build creative groups so that the ultimate result is the best work that it could possibly be. So that was a lesson to me.”
As for a follow-up to Gone Girl — her most recent novel, which followed Sharp Objects (2006) and Dark Places (2009) — Flynn, 54, told PEOPLE in 2022 that she felt the anticipation for a fourth book.
More recently, when asked how her next book was coming along, the author and founder of the Zando imprint Gillian Flynn Books admitted to PEOPLE this past May that trying to write a new novel in the shadow of her beloved 2012 thriller is no small feat.
“Oh, my goodness, it’s going! It’s hard to write after Gone Girl,” she said. Specifically, Flynn explained, it’s difficult not to compare the 2012 smash hit to her forthcoming fourth novel.
“I hope that people like it,” she continued. “Gone Girl is just lightning in a bottle, never gonna be replicated. So I have to kind of accept that and finish writing the dang book.”
