Rory McIlroy kisses wife Erica Stoll after Ryder Cup win — and addresses ‘unacceptable’ beer-throwing incident
Rory McIlroy gave his wife, Erica Stoll, a celebratory kiss — and condemned a fan who threw a beer can at her — after winning the 2025 Ryder Cup.
The athlete was spotted swiftly making his way through a crowd and toward his partner at the Bethpage Black Golf Course in Old Bethpage, NY, over the weekend.
“What a year,” McIlroy told Stoll, as they embraced for several seconds.
Stoll, 38, was front and center to support her husband throughout the three-day event, and was seen in now-viral footage getting what appeared to be a can tossed at her head on Saturday.
A video showed Stoll walking shortly behind McIlroy, 36, to the 17th hole when the incident occurred.
Stoll immediately turned around in shock to find who threw the beverage, while McIlroy’s security held him back from advancing into the crowd.
McIlroy later praised Stroll for handling the vile situation with “class and dignity.”
“Erica is fine. She’s a very, very strong woman,” he said on Sunday, per the Independent.
“You know, she handled everything this week with class and poise and dignity like she always has. I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.”
McIlroy was reportedly a big target on the European team and called out the foul “language” and “unacceptable and abusive behavior” of spectators throughout the weekend.
“I don’t think we should ever accept that in golf,” he said. “I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week. Golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons.”
Stroll and McIlroy, meanwhile, have continued to put on a united front after briefly splitting last year.
McIlroy filed for divorce from Stroll in May 2024 after seven years of marriage and was rumored to be dating news reporter Amanda Balionis that same month.
In June, he called off the divorce and told the Guardian that he and Stroll had “resolved [their] differences.”
The couple, who share a 5-year-old daughter, Poppy, have since not shied away from packing on the PDA during golf tournaments.
