Sandra Bullock divulges major ‘wake up call’ during partner Bryan Randall’s ALS journey
Sandra Bullock experienced a “big wake up call” during her late partner Bryan Randall’s ALS battle.
The actress opened up to “Good Hang” podcast host Amy Poehler on Tuesday about realizing she wasn’t “taking care of” herself as the person “taking care of everyone else.”
The “Practical Magic 2” star, 62, explained, “I am always the caretaker. … I’m not good at asking for help, but I needed help, and I needed to ask it in a way that was safe.”
She gushed over “a few angels” who “stepp[ed] forward” to help her navigate the photographer’s health struggles before his passing in August 2023 at 57.
“I have an incredible sister,” Bullock clarified, noting that her “extraordinary” sibling, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was “worried” and sounded “an alarm.”
At the time, Bullock-Prado said, “If you do not start taking care if you, something is gonna happen to you, and what’s gonna happen to [your kids]?”
Bullock, notably, is the mother of son Louis and daughter Laila.
She noted, during the episode, that “the caretaker world is absolutely underserved” and she has since “met so many people whose family members have been diagnosed with ALS.”
The “Gravity” star, who “did what [she] had to do in the situation [she] was in,” said she never “want[s] to say anything out of turn on what anyone else experienced in that situation … in their own journey.”
However, she added, “My story, my slice of pie, me and the kids, that’s all we can speak about. It serves no purpose other than, ‘I have information.’”
Bullock simply tells people, “This is what I know.”
The Golden Globe winner, notably, kept her partner’s health struggles under wraps, not breaking her silence until three years after his passing.
“He asked me not to share,” she revealed on the “SmartLess” podcast in August of the “traumatic” diagnosis, adding that while she “know[s] why he asked [her] not to,” the request “isolated” her.
“I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” the “Miss Congeniality” star recalled. “There was something that had shifted. My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”
Bullock’s “brutally honest” daughter has been urging her to date again, the Oscar winner confessed to “Not Gonna Lie With Kylie Kelce” listeners last week.
She did not elaborate on her personal feelings about getting back out there, more than a decade after falling for Randall.
