Shania Twain’s ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Character Has Miscarriage After Getting Pregnant With Don Johnson’s Baby

Doctor Odyssey took back that love triangle pregnancy — and now Shania Twain‘s fictional character suffered a miscarriage after planning to expand her family with Don Johnson on screen.
During the Thursday, May 1, episode of the hit ABC series, Johnson’s Captain Robert Massey made numerous attempts to call Twain’s character, Heather. She didn’t answer and the captain grew frustrated, which concerned Joshua Jackson‘s Dr. Max.
It wasn’t until the end of the episode that Captain Massey revealed to Max that Heather had a pregnancy loss. Despite his attempts to be there for his girlfriend, Heather, who didn’t make an appearance in the episode, wanted to take time for herself instead of grieving with Captain Massey.
“I told her I wanted to come be with her and she doesn’t want that,” he revealed. “I have called her I don’t know how many times over the last few days. It just goes straight to voicemail. Heather and this whole thing, it got me thinking about the future and life after the Odyssey. But you just can’t make someone else want the things you want. So I have taken the next best course: accept and surrender.”
Doctor Odyssey hasn’t been afraid to push boundaries and Thursday’s episode wasn’t any different. The medical drama originally surprised Us when a March episode showed Heather realizing that she was expecting a baby even though she was in menopause.
Avery (Phillipa Soo) was skeptical as a medical professional but multiple tests confirmed that Heather was actually expecting a baby. Captain Massey showed Max and Tristan (Sean Teale) how to step up by promising to support Heather and their baby after Max and Tristan didn’t react as expected to Avery’s pregnancy.
For those who don’t remember, Doctor Odyssey also featured a threesome between Avery, Max and Tristan that escalated into a condom breaking — and a pregnancy. None of them knew who the father was in the situation until Avery realized she wasn’t actually pregnant.
Thursday’s episode featured another twist in that complicated onscreen romance when Avery asked both Tristan and Max for casual sex — but only Tristan agreed. It turned out that Max only said no because he fell in love with Avery.
Jackson, 46, previously spoke exclusively to Us Weekly on the show’s approach to Max, Avery and Tristan’s romance.
“I feel like [producer] Ryan [Murphy]‘s approach to this is a much more adult approach than when I’ve done this on previous shows,” he told Us. “It was a ballsy thing to do to not just have the triangle be consummated but to have them consummated together,” he continued. “I have to say [that is] one of the things I’m most proud of [with] us this year.”
Doctor Odyssey airs on ABC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
