Sydney Sweeney dodges questions about American Eagle ad in first interview since controversy
Her lips are sealed.
Sydney Sweeney refused to discuss her controversial American Eagle ad in her first interview since the scandal broke.
During a sit-down with the Wall Street Journal, the 27-year-old actress remained tight-lipped when the campaign in question was brought up.
Last month, Sweeney made headlines after internet users claimed her American Eagle denim campaign promoted eugenics and “Nazi propaganda” by using a play on the words “genes” and “jeans.”
In one of the ads, the “Euphoria” star, who has blue eyes and blond hair, talked about how genes that are passed from parent to offspring often determine traits such as “hair color, personality and even eye color.”
She ended the video by looking at the camera and saying, “My jeans are blue.”
After receiving backlash from fans and being mocked by celebrities like Doja Cat and Lizzo, American Eagle released a defensive statement that read, “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Meanwhile, President Trump praised the ad, calling it “fantastic.”
Shortly after, public voter records revealed that Sweeney has been registered with the Republican Party of Florida in Monroe County since June 2024.
Another topic Sweeney chose to dodge during her WSJ interview was the exact nature of her relationship with her “Anyone But You” co-star Glen Powell following their flirty press tour in 2023.
“We wanted everything to be an activity,” she said of their suspiciously close rapport, “and then the audience and the people were the ones who created all the other narratives.”
However, in March, mere days after she called off her wedding to Jonathan Davino, Sweeney was spotted attending Powell’s sister’s wedding in Texas.
The WSJ article noted that the “Everything Sucks!” star wouldn’t comment on that wedding and “didn’t mention” that she would be attending Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s star-studded nuptials in Venice, Italy, in June.
Sweeney did, however, address the apparent misogyny surrounding her decision to sell her bathwater.
“It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting. They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater,” she told the magazine, referencing her “Euphoria” co-star and Barry Keoghna’s iconic scene in “Saltburn.”
