Sydney Sweeney is opening up about why she kept her relationship with her ex-fiancé Jonathan Davino out of the public eye.

In a new cover interview with Cosmopolitan published Thursday, Jan. 29, the 28-year-old Euphoria star talked about the romance that lasted for most of her 20s.

“I was in a relationship for a very long time, for seven and a half years, and I never talked about it,” Sweeney said.

She and the 42-year-old businessman from Chicago first sparked dating rumors in 2018 and got engaged in 2022. In March 2025, PEOPLE confirmed that the Anyone But You actress had called things off.

“I was very private. No one would ever see us. I think it’s important to have some things for myself,” Sweeney continued. “I understand that I’m a public person, but I’m still in my 20s. I’m still figuring out love, and it’s hard to do that with millions of people who have their own opinions of what that looks like.”

“At the same time, for all of my 20s, I put my head down and focused on work—and now I want to experience things. But it’s hard deciding that I want to experience love in the public eye. I’m just navigating it all,” she said.

Sweeney added that trying to date since then hasn’t been the easiest, claiming, “I wake up and I find out I’m dating a different guy anytime I stand in a room where there’s a single man.”

The Housemaid actress also said she spent “a few months of just crying my eyes out” as she tried to figure out how to even meet someone new.

“I’ve never dated before. I’ve never even used a dating app. My friends who aren’t in the industry are like, ‘We’ll just go out and meet someone.’ But I can’t just meet someone at a bar. It doesn’t work like that,” the actress said, adding, “I struggle with being alone.”

After ending her engagement, a source told PEOPLE, “She’s exactly where she wants to be. Most people would feel overwhelmed by her working schedule this year, but not Syd. She’s all about working right now and very excited about all her projects.”

“What did make her overwhelmed though was her relationship and her wedding. She didn’t feel right about it,” the insider added.

The Emmy-nominated actress is “in the middle of this magical career that she could only dream of a few years ago,” therefore, “This is what she wants to focus on right now.”

Following their split, a source told PEOPLE that Sweeney and music executive Scooter Braun were “casually hooking up.”

The Christy star was also spotted having a reunion with Davino in April 2025 and again in November, with a separate source telling PEOPLE at the time, “Sydney was determined to remain friendly with him after they split, but she has fully moved on.”
