Taylor Swift is in love — and looking to the future — on her new album.
The Grammy winner unleashed her 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, on Friday, Oct. 3. While she has fun playing the villain on a few tracks, much of the record is composed of sweet love songs.
On “Eldest Daughter,” Swift sings of accepting love that she never thought she’d find.
“I’m never gonna let you down / I’m never gonna leave you out / So many traitors / Smooth operators / I’m never gonna break that vow / I’m never gonna leave you now, now, now,” Swift sings on the track, later adding: “When I said I don’t believe in marriage / That was a lie / Every eldest daughter / Was the first lamb to the slaughter / so we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire.”
Later, on “Wi$h Li$t,”, Swift itemizes material and cosmetic things others lust after (see: “Balenci shades / And a fat ass with a baby face”). But she’s just looking forward to the hereafter with a lover.
“I just want you / Have a couple kids, got the whole block lookin’ like you / We tell the world to leave us the fuck alone … and they do / Wow / Got me dreamin’ ’bout a driveway with a basketball hoop / Boss up, settle down, got a wishlist / I just want you,” Swift sings. “I made wishes on all of the stars / Please, God, bring me a best friend / Who I think is hot / I thought I had it right once, twice, but I did not / You caught me off my guard / I hope I get what I want / ’Cause I know what I want.”
After weathering some headline-fueling breakups in recent years, Swift went public with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in September 2023. On Aug. 26, the pair announced in a joint Instagram post that they were engaged.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” the pair captioned the post, which ended with a dynamite emoji — a nod to “TNT,” their couple nickname.
As part of The Life of a Showgirl’s launch, Swift announced that The Release Party of a Showgirl — a theatrical release of her music video for “The Fate of Ophelia,” the rest of the album’s lyric videos and behind-the-scenes footage — will be screening in cinemas Oct. 3 – 5.
