Teyana Taylor Shares Update on Coparenting With Ex-Husband Iman Shumpert: ‘Show Up for Each Other’
Teyana Taylor is giving fans an update on her coparenting dynamic with ex-husband Iman Shumpert more than one year after their messy divorce.
“Divorce, to me, is you’re grieving the death of a living being,” Taylor, 35, said in an interview with Vanity Fair published Tuesday, January 13. “I think once children are involved, you understand the importance of really still having to show up for each other. At least for the next 18 years, and being the best coparents that we can be.”
Taylor added that she doesn’t “want people to start feeling scared of marriage, because marriage is a beautiful thing.”
Taylor and Shumpert, also 35, welcomed daughters Junie, 10, and Rue, 5, during their marriage, which lasted from 2016 to 2024.
Taylor revealed her split from Shumpert in September 2023.
“AHT AHT! Not too much on my bestie! In all fairness, Iman and I are separated and have been for a while,” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ ain’t one of the reasons for our departure. We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to coparenting our 2 beautiful children.”
Taylor continued, “Most importantly we are FAMILY & in the 10yrs together, 7yrs married we ain’t ever played with or about THAT. We just keep y’all asses out the group chat lol, which is the reason we’ve been able to successfully & peacefully separate without all of the outside noise.”
The following month, it was revealed that Taylor had filed for divorce from Shumpert in January 2023, citing “cruel treatment” as the reason for the split. (In divorce law, cruel treatment is defined as physical, verbal, sexual or emotional cruelty committed by the defendant against the plaintiff, endangering their physical or mental well-being.)
In her initial filing, Taylor claimed that Shumpert was a “jealous narcissist” during their marriage. However, Shumpert denied the allegation in his own filing, stating that the only reason for their divorce was an “irretrievably broken bond.”
Taylor and Shumpert’s divorce was finalized in July 2024, but their court battle wasn’t over yet. In March 2025, the One Battle After Another actress accused the former NBA star of leaking details about their divorce settlement, claiming that they had not yet reached an agreement. Shumpert claimed that Taylor was the one who leaked information and violated the terms of their divorce, citing a March 2024 Instagram video.
A judge sided with Shumpert in August 2025, ordering Taylor to pay $70,000 to Shumpert after finding her in contempt of court, according to legal docs obtained by Us Weekly.
Taylor said during an appearance on The Breakfast Club at the time that she gladly paid the money to her ex.
“If it’s gonna give me my peace and we can be done with this for good, I sent that wire so fast,” she explained, calling the payment the “best lil’ coin I ever spent in my life.”
Following her divorce from Shumpert, Taylor moved on with actor Aaron Pierre, confirming their romance in June 2025 after they appeared together at Vanity Fair’s Oscars party that March. Reports circulated in late 2025 that the couple had split, although they have not commented publicly on the status of their romance.
“One thing I don’t do is rewrite history,” Taylor told VF in Tuesday’s interview. “When I love, my love is real. So whatever you’ve seen was a real display of love until there was no more. And that’s OK.”
