‘That was a fun phone call’
Shailene Woodley shared that she didn’t learn her role as Mary Jane Watson in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” was cut until a year later.
“That was a fun phone call,” the actress, who was set to star opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in the 2014 movie, said during an interview with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.
“I was cast as Mary Jane for ‘Spider-Man,’ which was my dream,” she explained. “Oh my god, Spider-Man’s my favorite superhero; Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, ‘This is so exciting!’”
Woodley, now 34, stated that she and Garfield, now 43, filmed about “three scenes together,” and she expected them to appear in the movie.
“Then, like a year later, they were like, ‘So, you’re not in the movie anymore.’ I was like, ‘What? What do you mean?’” she recalled.
“And they’re like, ‘We’ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and we’re going to wait for whatever happens between [Emma Stone] and Andrew [Garfield].’”
The “Divergent” star explained that Watson was planned to be introduced after the death of Stone’s character, Gwen Stacy.
“That’s what I was told, but again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible, and they were like, ‘We can’t do this,’” Woodley quipped.
However, plans for a third movie were later scrapped
Garfield, meanwhile, was first introduced as Parker in the first 2012 movie “The Amazing Spider-Man,” with Stone, 37, portraying his on-screen love interests.
Ultimately, Stone’s character died at the end of the second movie during a confrontation with villain Harry Osborn, played by Dane DeHaan.
While Garfield’s run as the main Spider-Man ended in the second installment, he reprised his role in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” alongside two generations of Spider-Man stars: Tobey Maguire, the original superhero who took on the role in three films released between 2002 and 2007, and Tom Holland, the current man in the suit.
The 2021 Sony Pictures film showed Garfield, Maguire, 51, and Holland, 30, come together as Spider-Man from three different universes.
Zendaya, 29, is currently playing the role of Mary Jane alongside Holland, her now-husband. She assumed the part in the first 2017 movie with Holland titled “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
It’s unclear if Gwen Stacy’s character will be introduced in the current franchise.
