Movie watchers have spoken and ranked the worst sequels of all time – with some surprising results given the box office success.

Digg recently pulled March 2024 statistics from casino.ca about the worst movie sequels of all time based on IMDb reviews.

According to casino.ca, the list comes from more than 100,000 reviews on IMDb that contain keywords like ‘disappointing,’ ‘boring’ and ‘trash.’

All 20 films on this list made more than $1 billion at the box office, 10 of the movies have received at least 90 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and more than two of them received multiple Academy Award nominations.

Although the critics and moviegoers have made up their minds, the IMDb users have too, and their selections of the worst sequels may be surprising.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King took home 11 Academy Awards in 2004, including Best Director and Best Picture.

The Oscar wins were not enough for the box-office hit to miss out on negative IMDb reviews.

The recent statistics show that 8 percent of the 4,236 reviews contain negative wording.

It’s negative worded reviews with those of Top Gun: Maverick – the highly anticipated 2022 film that became the highest grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career.

The movie holds a 96 percent Rotten Tomato rating, which is the same rating Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 received.

The fantasy film only has 1,119 IMDb reviews but 9 percent of them have negative wording in them.

Other films that are on the negative-worded comment side include Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Avengers: Endgame.

All three of those films were highly anticipated and two of those three films made more than $2 billion at the box office.

Avengers: Endgame currently holds a 15 percent rating of reviews with negative wording and is currently tied with Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Captain America: Civil War has a much higher IMDb negative-worded comment rating at 18 percent, but it’s nowhere near as high as a classic 2015 action film.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was a highly anticipated movie that brought back previous Spider-Man's played by Toby Maguire and James Garfield

Furious 7 was the highest grossing film of 2015 and the final movie Paul Walker was in before his death in 2013.

The film’s lead single ‘See You Again’ by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth was also a number one hit.

Sadly, with these factors, Furious 7 still received a 20 percent rating on IMDb reviews with negative wording.

Its sequel, The Fate of the Furious, cracked the top 10 of the IMDb negative-worded reviews at 26 percent and tied with Iron Man 3.

Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens includes cast members from the original films, including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and the late Carrie Fisher.

It grossed more than $2 million at the box office, and yet, it’s ranked number 8 on casino.ca’s list with a 30 percent negative worded rating.

Not to far ahead of it is Avatar: The Way of Water at 31 percent, and Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom tying at 32 percent.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon only has 35 percent on Rotten Tomatoes despite making more than $1.124 billion at the box office.

It was the final Transformers film to star Shia LeBeouf and the first film without the original female lead, Megan Fox.

It’s 34 percent negative-worded comments rating made it ranked number 4 on the list – only 2 percent behind Skyfall.

2012’s Skyfall was a box-office smash that won two Academy Awards.

The classic James Bond film received a 36 percent rating, but it’s nowhere near the whopping 45 percent that the second worst rated sequel got.

Star Wars Ep. VII: The Last Jedi was not even close to a box office failure and it was rated 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, none of these ratings can compare to the number 1 worst movie sequel of all time: Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Mark Wahlberg starred in the film that managed to make more than $1 billion at the box office.

Not only did it receive a 55 percent rating of negative-worded IMDb reviews, but it also received negative reviews from critics.

The four Transformers movies that were released after the number one worst film sequel received mixed reviews and none of them were close to making $1 billion at the box office.
