NEED TO KNOW

  • TiVo has officially stopped selling digital video recorders (DVRs)
  • The company first introduced the DVR to the market 26 years ago, allowing consumers to easily record their favorite TV shows and skip commercials
  • TiVo said it will continue to offer product support, despite no longer manufacturing new hardware

A chapter in home entertainment history has officially closed: TiVo has stopped selling DVRs.

The company first began selling digital video recorders in 1999, generating major waves in the home entertainment space.

However, TiVo hasn’t released a new model since the 2019 EDGE DVR, and the company stated that it decided to stop selling hardware and accessories for good on Sept. 30.

“As of September 30, 2025, TiVo [stopped] selling EDGE DVR products, including hardware and accessories, both online and through agents,” TiVo said in a statement to Cord Cutters.

“TiVo, and its partners, no longer manufacture TiVo DVR hardware, and our remaining inventory is now depleted,” the company continued.

Customers with existing TiVo products, however, shouldn’t worry. In a statement to Variety, the company said it will continue to offer support for products currently in homes.

“We are very proud of the TiVo DVR legacy, and the great experience TiVo has always provided lives on in our TiVo OS for Connected Televisions, which is available on televisions from Sharp in the U.S. and multiple brands throughout Europe,” a spokesperson for the brand said.

TiVo did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

TiVo was one of the first consumer devices to give people control over when and how they watched television, making it a game-changer in home entertainment at the time.

It enabled users to pause, rewind and record their favorite TV shows, as well as easily schedule those recordings — with no need for a cumbersome VHS setup. It also enabled viewers to skip commercials.

While the company helped revolutionize the way viewers consumed digital entertainment, it ultimately struggled in recent years as more and more viewers began watching their favorite shows through cloud-based streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.

TiVo is now focused solely on the software market. There is no longer any mention of DVR hardware on the company’s website.
