Tori Spelling reflected on her failed almost romance with Freddie Prinze Jr., revealing that their only date was “ruined” by her friends.

“It was supposed to be this very innocent relationship on camera, and it kind of was off camera and he and I actually developed a thing for each other,” Spelling — who briefly worked with Prinze Jr. on the 1997 film “The House of Yes” — said on the Wednesday episode of her “misSPELLING” podcast.

“We went on one date, and to this day — I mean, it wasn’t meant to be. My friends ruined it.”

The “Beverly Hills, 90210” actress, 52, recalled how she was living in an apartment with her “best friend,” who “had all [of her] friends over” after they returned home from college, and the group of rowdy young people were smoking weed.

“I was like, ‘You guys, I have a date. Take this serious[ly]. He’s gonna smell this, he’s gonna think it’s me. It’s not me.’ And they were just like, ‘We’ll be good, we’ll be good,’” Spelling revealed.

“And I was like, ‘Well, it’s too late now, you’re all stoned and you’re sitting on my couch and he’s gonna walk through.’ ‘Cause I lived in a building where the elevator came up. So he came up to pick me up to go to a movie at Universal City.”

She continued, “Anyway, he came up, and my friends were so weird, and they were so embarrassing, and I just remember one of my friends was like, ‘Freddie, is that Frederick?’ And I was just like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ He goes, ‘Do I call you Fred?’ I was like, ‘What is happening?’”

The pair then made a quick departure for their date and stepped out to watch the 1996 film, “Cable Guy,” starring Jim Carrey.

“So that was it, but we stayed friends-ish,” Spelling said. Though, she noted that the two stars had a few “makeout” sessions in their trailer during their lunch breaks while filming. But things didn’t go further than “just kissing.”

“He was very pure,” Spelling said of the actor, now 49.

“I still remember Freddie coming to set ‘90210’ and I didn’t know and it was after and I was like, ‘Oh, hi hi,’ and he’s like ‘Oh hi.’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, [the makeup artist] knew I was coming. I have an audition for this movie,’” Spelling reflected.

The movie Prinze Jr. auditioned for and would ultimately star in turned out to be “I Know What You Did Last Summer” where he met his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The pair went on to tie the knot in 2002. They share two children together: daughter Charlotte and son Rocky, whom they welcomed in 2009 and 2012, respectively.

Spelling eventually moved on with her now-ex husband Dean McDermott, whom she married in May 2006. After 17 years of marriage, Spelling announced the two were getting a divorce in June 2023. They finalized their divorce in November 2025.

They share five children: Liam, 18, Stella, 17, Hattie, 14, Finn, 13, and Beau, 8.
