Vanessa Hudgens makes rare comment about falling for ‘cute’ ex Zac Efron
Vanessa Hudgens is reflecting on the start of something new.
The actress made rare comments about falling for her ex-boyfriend Zac Efron while filming “High School Musical” on Wednesday.
Hudgens, who played Gabriella Montez in the Disney Channel movie franchise, spoke about the romance with former co-star Bart Johnson on the “Get Your Head in the Game” podcast.
The “Say OK” singer’s first impression of Efron, who acted alongside her as Troy Bolton, during their audition was, “Oh, my God, he’s so cute.”
She acknowledged that their “chemistry was so real,” recalling, “There was one other girl there for Gabriella, one other guy there for Troy. We swapped, mixed and matched and yeah, that was it.”
Hudgens added that the former couple’s offscreen romance benefited their onscreen performance.
“It really does [help],” the “Beastly” star confirmed. “Especially when you’re young and it’s all sweet and innocent.”
She and Efron, 37, were an item from 2005 to 2010.
Hudgens went on to date actor Austin Butler for nearly a decade, moving on with MLB player Cole Tucker after their 2020 breakup.
The athlete, 29, popped the question during a November 2022 Paris trip and married Hudgens in Mexico one year later.
Their first child, whose name and sex has not been revealed, was born in July 2024.
The couple announced the following summer that their second baby is on the way with maternity shoot photos, captioned, “Round two!!!”
Efron sweetly gushed over Hudgens’ expanding family to Access Hollywood last year, predicting his ex would be the “best mom ever.”
As for the “Down to Earth” alum’s love life, he has been linked to “Fast and Furious” star Michelle Rodriguez, businesswoman Sami Miró, his “Neighbors” co-star Halston Sage and more stars over the years.
Efron and Nina Dobrev recently sparked romance rumors after the “Vampire Diaries” alum’s split from Shaun White, but she shot down speculation Wednesday.
Dobrev, 26, shook her head “no” when asked whether they are together — and nodding “yes” to a subsequent question about being just friends.
