What Is Travis Kelce’s Favorite ‘Life of a Showgirl’ Song ‘Opalite’ About? Lyrics Breakdown
Travis Kelce revealed weeks ago that “Opalite” is his favorite track on fiancée Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl — but what is it actually about?
Only Swift, 35, knows for sure, but it seems the new song — track 3 on Showgirl — is about her search for lasting love before meeting Kelce, also 35.
“I had a bad habit / Of missing lovers past / My brother used to call it / Eating out of the trash / It’s never gonna last,” the Grammy winner begins in the first verse. “I thought my house was haunted / I used to live with ghosts / And all the perfect couples said, ‘When you know you know / And when you don’t you don’t.’”
In the chorus, Swift refers to her mom, Andrea, sharing words of wisdom after previous relationships ended.
“But my mama told me, ‘It’s alright / You were dancing through the lightning strike / Sleepless in the onyx night / But now the sky is opalite,’” Swift sings. “Oh, my Lord / Never met no one like you before / You had to make your own sunshine / But now the sky is opalite.”
The title itself could also be a reference to Kelce, whose birthday is October 5, making his birthstone opal. Opalite can refer to both synthetic glass that’s designed to look like opal and a naturally occurring stone that has similar properties to opal. Natural opalite, it should be noted, is often green with gray inclusions — colors that can also be seen in hazel eyes, which Kelce has.
Eagle-eyed Swifties also know that the “Style” singer wore opal earrings while cheering on Kelce at the AFC Championship Game in January 2024, where he and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 and clinched their spot in that year’s Super Bowl (which they went on to win).
The second verse of the song hints that Kelce was also struggling to find love before meeting Swift in the summer of 2023.
“You couldn’t understand it / Why you felt alone / You were in it for real / She was in her phone / You were just a pose,” Swift sings. “And don’t we try to love love / And give it all we got / You finally left the table / And what a simple thought / You’re starving ’til you’re not.”
Prior to meeting Swift, Kelce dated Kayla Nicole off and on for five years before calling it quits in 2022. He first connected with Swift after attending one of her Eras Tour concerts in Kansas City and complaining on his “New Heights” podcast that he didn’t get to meet her backstage. They soon met in real life, and the rest is history.
In August, Swift announced The Life of a Showgirl on Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast. Days later, they confirmed their engagement with a joint Instagram post captioned, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
On a later episode of “New Heights,” Kelce confirmed that “Opalite” is his No. 1 song on Showgirl.
“I think ‘Opalite’ might be my favorite, though, at least right now,” the Chiefs tight end told his brother, Jason Kelce, in August. “Every time it comes on, I always catch myself.”
The Life of a Showgirl is out now.
