NEED TO KNOW
- The Biggest Loser aired for 18 seasons from 2004 to 2020
- Through extreme dieting and exercise, 18 winners lost weight and took home a $250,000 prize
- The series is the subject of the docuseries Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser, which debuted on Netflix on Aug. 15
The Biggest Loser helped hundreds of contestants completely transform their bodies over the years.
The controversial competition series launched in 2004, crowning 18 winners (who took home $250,000 each) before its final episode aired in 2020.
The show is the subject of the docuseries Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser, which debuted on Netflix on Aug. 15. The three-part series questions if the show — which encouraged contestants to lose weight quickly through extreme dieting and exercise — was beneficial or harmful for participants.
Fit for TV interviews a number of former contestants, production members and trainers, including Bob Harper. (Jillian Michaels and Dolvett Quince, among other trainers, joined Harper throughout The Biggest Loser.) While viewers of the series saw contestants changing their lives, the effects weren’t always permanent.
“Within three days after the show, I had gained 25 to 30 lbs. back just in water weight alone,” season 1 winner Ryan Benson told PEOPLE in August 2024. “They were setting us up to fail.”
So where are all 18 winners of The Biggest Loser now? Here’s everything to know about their lives after the show.
Season 1: Ryan Benson
Benson started his journey on the show at 330 lbs., losing 122 lbs. — or 37% of his body weight — by the finale. Though he left the series at 208 lbs., he quickly gained much of it back, admitting he took extreme measures to win the competition.
“For the last 24 hours, I didn’t put anything in my body and just went to the gym and had a rubber suit on to sweat and then went to the sauna,” he told PEOPLE in August 2024. “It’s no secret that I gained back all the weight.”
Now, 20 years later, Benson is the SVP of global content delivery at Lionsgate. He has three teenage children, whom he says he’s raising with a more holistic approach to health and body image.
Benson was interviewed for Fit for TV. In the docuseries, he said he has a “bit of PTSD” from The Biggest Loser.
Season 2: Matt Hoover
Season 2 of The Biggest Loser — which aired in 2005 — was won by Matt Hoover, who began at 339 lbs. and finished at 182 lbs., losing 46% of his body weight.
Hoover left the show with a new lease on life — and a new love. He fell for the runner up, Suzy Preston, and proposed to her on Today. They got married in September 2006, and have since welcomed two boys named Rex and Jax.
In September 2024, Hoover celebrated the couple’s 18th anniversary. “How it started vs. how it’s going,” he wrote on Instagram. “18 years of being married! Who says reality show romances never last?”
Hoover opted to get a vertical sleeve gastrectomy procedure in 2019. He has documented his results and ongoing health journey for fans on Instagram.
Season 3: Erik Chopin
Season 3 winner Erik Chopin started at 407 lbs. and shed 214, ending the show at 193 lbs. (and having lost 52% of his weight).
Over three years later in January 2010, Chopin told the New York Post that he had gained 150 lbs. back.
“People wonder if the show keeps tabs on you when it’s over,” he said. “No, not really. But … I’m the one who became self-destructive.”
Chopin is currently enjoying life with his wife, son and daughter, according to his X.
Season 4: Bill Germanakos
Bill Germanakos won season 4 in 2007, losing 164 lbs. from his starting weight of 334 lbs. for a 49% weight loss. Season 4 also marked the first “couples” season, where contestants were paired with loved ones to tackle challenges and motivate each other.
As of January 2020, Germanakos was still focused on living a healthy lifestyle.
“The weigh-in has occurred and the official results are in!” he shared in one post on X. “The challenge was to ‘reverse the curse’ of the usual 7 lb weight gain during the holidays. Well, I lost 9 pounds in December, so mission accomplished! Time to set new attainable goals for 2020!”
Germanakos is the proud dad of a son, Luke, and daughter, Hope.
Season 5: Ali Vincent
Ali Vincent won season 5 of The Biggest Loser after shedding 47% of her body weight — she began the competition at 234 lbs. and ended it at 122 lbs. Vincent was the first woman to win the show, and subsequently starred on her own series, Live Big with Ali Vincent, and published a book, Believe It, Be It: How Being the Biggest Loser Won Me Back My Life.
Vincent has been open about struggling to maintain her weight loss.
“On April 16th I did one of the hardest things in my life I joined Weight Watchers and weighed in close to the weight I started at on The Biggest Loser,” she wrote in an April 2016 Facebook post, adding that she felt “embarrassed” and “ashamed.”
However, Vincent decided to instead “feel proud” of herself again, she wrote. She lost weight again and now teaches Pilates classes, per her Instagram.
In April 2023, she announced her new podcast called Weighing in with Ali. She documents her life with her wife, Jen, and their three children online.
Season 6: Michelle Aguilar Whitehead
Season 6 Winner Michelle Aguilar Whitehead started The Biggest Loser at 242 lbs. She ultimately lost 110 lbs., a.k.a. 45% of body weight.
More than 15 years later, she’s maintained her new lifestyle.
“Cannot believe 15 years ago tonight I stood on the sound stage in LA and the confetti fell and I had won season 6 of @biggestloser,” she wrote on Instagram in December 2023. “Time flies and for me it’s been the best and wildest ride. I never would have imagined all the ways The Biggest Loser would change my life. Thankful, grateful & blessed!”
“I’ll never be able to thank [Michaels] enough for the way she impacted my life,” she added. “She was present and patient with a broken girl and helped me stand on my own two feet!”
Whitehead now shares two girls with her husband, Micah Whitehead.
Season 7: Helen Phillips
Season 7 winner Helen Phillips started The Biggest Loser at 257 lbs. and ended it at 117 lbs., for 54% total weight loss.
“The energy here is so unbelievable,” Phillips told PEOPLE after the finale. “But I feel so good! I feel like I can do anything.”
Phillips has lived a private life since taking home the $250,000 cash prize. However, she did appear in a July 2017 StreetStrider commercial, where she discussed using the elliptical to lose weight.
Season 8: Danny Cahill
In 2009, Danny Cahill won season 8’s “second chances” season, after losing 239 lbs. from a starting weight of 430 lbs. (a 55% total weight loss).
After the show, he appeared in a 2010 holiday movie called A Christmas Snow. In 2012, Cahill and wife Darci wrote a book together about his weight loss, titled Losing Big: The Incredible Untold Story of Danny and Darci Cahill.
In May 2016, Cahill told ABC News that he had gained 100 lbs. since the show.
“I did feel like a million bucks for a couple years. I kept the weight off completely. I wondered why others were gaining it back. I was working out two hours a day and riding my bike all over town to go where I was going,” Cahill said. “Once that stopped, the weight started creeping back on.”
“When you gain weight back, even when you’re in school, it’s shameful,” he added. “When you’re in front of America, then it’s 10 times as shameful.”
In 2021, Cahill appeared in the “Makeover My Life” episode of For Real: The Story of Reality TV, an Andy Cohen-hosted E! series.
He also spoke to Fit for TV cameras, discussing “the shame of being a failure after being a success.”
Season 9: Michael Ventrella
Michael Ventrella won The Biggest Loser in 2010 after starting at 526 lbs. and losing 264 lbs., a.k.a. half of his body weight.
In December 2010, Ventrella revealed that he had spent his prize money paying off student loans, credit cards bills and a truck loan, and was struggling financially.
“I have no money coming in and a lot of money going out,” he told Chicago magazine. “That scares me to death.”
At the time, Ventrella said he was focused on bodybuilding and was working on a cookbook.
Ventrella now works in real estate in Illinois, he shared on his Facebook.
Season 10: Patrick House
The “Pay It Forward” theme of season 10 in 2010 encouraged contestants to inspire and lead their communities toward healthier lifestyles. Winner Patrick House began at 400 lbs. and lost 181 lbs., marking a 45% total weight loss.
House looks back fondly on the experience. “Food addiction was a full-blown problem for me, and I was gaining weight every year,” he told PEOPLE in May 2016. “Had it not been for Biggest Loser, I could be 500 lbs. I could be dead, I could have had a heart attack.”
According to his X, House now “travel[s] the country doing motivational speaking engagements and appearances.”
Season 11: Olivia Ward
Olivia Ward competed on season 11 of The Biggest Loser in 2011 with her sister Hannah Curlee. Ward took home the win after losing 129 lbs. for a 49% weight loss.
“I tell people, I feel like I won the weight loss lottery,” Ward told PEOPLE in March 2023. “Losing the weight was wonderful, but just to have that experience and to be around that type of expertise and that kind of support … what I left with was knowing that I had this incredible opportunity to pass on what had been given to me.”
Ward added that she’s “kept [her] weight off for 10 years” and continues to track her food, like she learned on the show. Since her season wrapped, she’s gotten married, become a mom and worked as a trainer.
“Very shortly after Biggest Loser, I started teaching at SoulCycle, and I taught there up until this past July,” she said.
Ward and Curlee also started the app Counterbalance, which provides daily encouragements, recipes, community and more.
The sisters spoke about their experience in Fit for TV, calling The Biggest Loser “the best thing that ever happened to us.”
Season 12: John Rhode
Season 12’s John Rhode started the season at 445 lbs. and shed 220 lbs. — a 49% weight loss.
After his win, Rhode took to running marathons and doing CrossFit, and even did a promotional video for the gym in 2012. “I’m more energetic, I’m more optimistic. My entire countenance on life has changed,” he said in it.
These days, Rhode seems to be living a private life. However, he is listed on a site for speaking engagements.
According to the site, Rhode and his wife Jill share two boys: Daniel and Dimitri.
Season 13: Jeremy Britt
In 2012, season 13 winner Jeremy Britt conquered the “No Excuses” season, which was all about overcoming personal barriers to weight loss. Britt left the show at 190 lbs. after losing 199, marking a 51% total weight loss.
That same year, Britt posted a fitness update to Facebook, writing, “How is everyone’s weight loss journey going?……..I am currently working on maintaining my weight and trying to work on my Gun Show.”
Britt has not posted on the platform since 2013 and lives a private life.
Season 14: Danni Allen
Danni Allen won Biggest Loser in 2013. She began at 258 lbs. and lost 121 lbs., finishing at 137 lbs. (a 47% weight loss). Shortly after her win, she became the marketing director for a Chicago-area Planet Fitness after the show.
In May 2019, she told the Chicago Tribune that she weighed around 175 to 180 lbs., which she considered a “healthy, happy weight for me to maintain without going crazy in the gym.”
Allen married David Pufundt on Nov. 12, 2022, per Instagram. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Luka Thomas, on Jan. 7, 2025.
She continues to meet up with fans for workouts and share updates about her health.
Season 15: Rachel Frederickson
Season 15 winner Rachel Frederickson started The Biggest Loser at 260 lbs. and ended it at 105 lbs. — a 59% weight loss. Frederickson faced backlash for losing what many viewers of the show considered too much weight.
“When I stood on stage at the live finale, I had never felt stronger. I had accomplished everything I wanted to do. I was extremely proud of myself,” she wrote in a December 2024 essay for Today. “That moment didn’t last long. Comments during the controversial storm following my weight loss were hurtful.”
However, the winner chose to focus on her health and career.
“2014 has been a year full of learning, changing and growing for me,” she explained. “I’ve been taking college classes, working in voice-over, walking dogs at the local shelter, training for my first marathon, and through my new career at DreamJobbing [a website that aids job search], I’m helping others change their story.”
Per her LinkedIn, Frederickson is currently working as a customer insights and analytics manager for Land O’Lakes. She earned her bachelor’s degree in logistics, materials and supply chain management from the University of Minnesota in 2020.
Season 16: Toma Dobrosavljevic
Toma Dobrosavljevic won the “Glory Days” season, which featured exclusively former athletes. Dobrosavljevic began at 366 lbs. and ultimately lost 171 lbs., making for a 46% total weight loss.
Dobrosavljevic is the second winner to find love through the show, getting together with season 15’s Chelsea Arthurs.
In an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark in February 2021, the couple told the host how they met and discussed their upcoming wedding plans.
“I remember him walking out [on TV] and I was like, ‘Oh yeah! He is so cute,’ and I even tweeted about it!” Arthurs said. While they were both in other relationships at the time, they reconnected online four years later when they were single again.
“We were in some Biggest Loser alumni groups online and we started talking,” Arthurs continued. “He flew down [to see me] and we’ve been together ever since then!”
Season 17: Roberto Hernandez
Season 17 winner Roberto Hernandez started at 348 lbs. and lost 160 lbs., achieving a 46% weight loss.
“It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve managed to keep most of the weight off!” he wrote in a March 2018 Instagram post. “But I know I still need to keep working hard and get healthier! Not just for me or my family but for the people that supported me and accompanied me on my BL journey! Because it proves that it can be done!”
In a 2020 update, Hernandez shared that he and his brother, who he competed with, “might not be at [finale] weight” but “are definitely not where we were.”
“Life is a struggle,” he said. “But it’s all about grabbing the bull from the horns and keep going!!!”
Hernandez is married to Rosie Hernandez, with whom he shares three children. He lives in the Chicago area.
Season 18: Jim DiBattista
Season 18 came in 2020, after the show had taken a four-year hiatus. The winner of the reboot was Jim DiBattista, who began at 385 lbs. and lost 144 lbs., marking a 37% total weight loss.
“That final moment on stage — when I knew I was The Biggest Loser winner — I looked over at my wife, my three sons and my trainer, Erica, and I had a feeling of accomplishment that I had never felt before in my life,” he said during the finale. “I am so proud that I was able to get it done for ALL of them; they sacrificed so much for me. The Biggest Loser changed my life forever. I am and will always be the show’s ‘BIGGEST’ cheerleader!”
DiBattista continues to be a dad to his three boys and a husband to wife Deb. He currently works as the head coach of Cardinal O’Hara High School boys’ lacrosse team.
In March 2022, he shared some progress photos, writing, “I am happy, living my life and in way better shape than I ever was in my entire life.”
