Will There Be a Task Season 2? What We Know So Far About the HBO Max Series’ Next Chapter
NEED TO KNOW
- Task follows an FBI task force investigating a series of violent robberies in the suburbs of Philadelphia
- The HBO Max crime drama stars Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey
- Season 1 concluded on Oct. 19, and the show has yet to be renewed for a second season
Season 1 of Task has come to an end — and the show’s future is uncertain.
Created by Brad Ingelsby, the HBO Max crime drama Task is set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia. It follows FBI Agent Tom (Mark Ruffalo), who leads a task force investigating a string of violent robberies carried out by a seemingly ordinary family man, Robbie (Tom Pelphrey).
As Robbie’s actions target stash houses run by the notorious Dark Hearts motorcycle gang, a deadly turf war erupts, escalating tensions in the city and drawing both law enforcement and criminal factions into a high-stakes battle over control, survival and justice.
The first season of Task premiered in September 2025. That same month, Ruffalo told PEOPLE that he worked alongside real-life retired FBI special agent Scott Duffey to prepare for his role as Tom.
“I learned that the best FBI agents have a lot of empathy,” he shared after previously noting that when he wasn’t with Duffey, he spent most of his time going around Philadelphia and eating the city’s famous dish. “I ate a lot of Philly cheesesteak sandwiches,” Ruffalo confessed.
Season 1 of Task concluded on Oct. 19; however, the streaming platform has yet to renew the series for a second chapter.
So, will there be a season 2 of Task? Here’s everything we know so far, including what Ingelsby has said.
Warning: Task season 1 spoilers ahead!
Will there be a Task season 2?
HBO has not renewed Task for a second season.
That being said, Ingelsby told Esquire in October 2025 that he’d “love to have a chance to do another season of Task.”
What has the crew said about a potential Task season 2?
While speaking to Esquire, Ingelsby didn’t offer any concrete updates on the future of Task, but he emphasized his passion for telling stories rooted in his hometown in suburban Philadelphia.
“If people respond to Task and keep responding to Task, I’d love to tell more stories about this place, because I love writing about this place,” he said. “I do feel like I have more stories to tell.”
Ingelsby added that the series has resonated deeply with locals — much like his other hit TV series, Mare of Easttown, which was also set in the Delaware County “Delco” area.
“Listen, I live here in Chester County. I could throw a stone and hit Delco. It’s literally across the street,” he shared. “So maybe the response is a bit louder here because there’s a vested interest from the people in this community to watch the show.”
Ingelsby teased in an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter that there could even be a crossover event between the two shows.
“I think there were still more stories to be told about people in Delaware County,” Ingelsby said. “They exist in the same world, so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Mare walked into a Wawa that Tom was in. I don’t have a story in mind that’s a crossover, but I love the idea of their worlds intersecting.”
Who could join the cast of Task season 2?
The first season of Task included several major deaths, making it unlikely that Pelphrey, Alison Oliver (who played Lizzie Stover) and Raúl Castillo (who portrayed Cliff Broward) will return for a potential second season — except perhaps through flashbacks.
Season 2 could feature Ruffalo returning as FBI Agent Tom Brandis, though any production plans would likely need to accommodate the actor’s already packed schedule.
He is currently filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day for Marvel and is attached to several other projects, including Good Sex and Crime 101, per IMDb.
Where can I watch Task?
All seven episodes of Task season 1 are available to stream on HBO Max.
