Can you imagine Billy Gibbons and the late Dusty Hill of ZZ Top without beards?
In a new interview on comedian Jay Mohr’s Mohr Stories podcast, Gibbons claimed shaving brand Gillette once offered him and Hill, who died in 2021, $1 million each to shave their iconic beards for a commercial.
“It’s true,” said the vocalist and guitarist, alleging that Gillette denies the claim. “It was a million dollars per man.”
“But we called Mr. Merlis [music executive Bob Merlis]. I said, ‘Bob, we got this offer.’ ‘What?’ I said, ‘We’ve been offered a million dollars each to shave on TV,'” continued Gibbons, a founder of ZZ Top alongside Hill and Frank Beard — notably the only beardless member of the band.
“‘Well,’ he said, ‘The money’s good.’ He said, ‘You might as well consider doing it, but I’m not so sure you guys — any of you guys — know what’s under there,'” Gibbons recalled. “So we passed. We passed, and our fans loved it. Word got out.”
PEOPLE has reached out to Gillette for comment.
ZZ Top is currently gearing up for an extensive North American tour of headlining dates, festivals and joint shows with Dwight Yoakam.
The tour kicks off March 21 in Abilene, Texas and continues through May 23 in Huntington, W. Va.
The band currently tours with bassist Elwood Francis, who joined the crew after Hill’s death.
ZZ Top’s last music release was the 2022 album RAW, a collection of classic songs recorded by the band’s original lineup in 2019 to coincide with their Netflix documentary, That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.
“‘The Dust’ may have left the building but he’s still very much with us,” said Gibbons and Beard in a statement at the time, referencing the late Hill.
