  • During a Sept. 17 appearance on Good Morning America, Twilight author Stephenie Meyer teased that there were eventual plans to tell more of Bella and Edward’s story
  • “I have other stories outlined,” she said, promising that her outlines would eventually be released if she never got the chance to write them
  • The author also explained that she would refresh her original four books if given the chance, since she thinks that she is “a better writer now” than she was 20 years ago

It’s been 17 years since author Stephenie Meyer concluded her original Twilight saga with the fourth book, Breaking Dawn. However, she does see a future for star-crossed lovers Bella Swan and Edward Cullen.

During the Wednesday, Sept. 17 episode on Good Morning America, ABC News aired a teaser from the 51-year-old writer’s Nightline interview with Juju Chang. In it she said that, to her at least, the characters were currently “frozen where Breaking Dawn ended.”

That doesn’t mean that they’ll necessarily stay that way.

“I have other stories outlined,” Meyer admitted, teasing future additions to the world. While she said that she wasn’t sure if she’d “ever get to” writing the novels, she did make a promise to fans.

“I’ll have somebody disseminate them after my death, my outlines, if I never get around to it,” she vowed, adding, “But to me, the stories go on.”

If she had her way, Meyer might even rewrite the original four novels: 2005’s Twilight, 2006’s New Moon, 2007’s Eclipse and 2008’s Breaking Dawn.

Chang noted that Meyer told her she’d love to refresh the books “if she could.” As for why, Chang recalled, “She said, essentially, ‘I’m a better writer now.’ ”

If additional novels do ever arrive, this would not be the first time that Meyer expanded on the written world of Twilight, which also sparked a blockbuster film series that spanned five movies and starred the likes of Kristen Stewart as Bella, Robert Pattinson as Edward and Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black.

In 2020, Meyer unleashed the novel Midnight Sun, which told the story of the first book from Edward’s point of view.

A press release at the time described the companion book as one that took “a new and decidedly dark twist” on the original.

“Meeting Bella is both the most intriguing and unnerving event [Edward] has experienced in his many years as a vampire,” the description read. “As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life.”

In 2024, it was reported that Netflix was developing an animated series that would bring the events of Midnight Sun to life.

In 2025, Meyer said that she was still surprised by the breakaway success of her novels, which she attributed in part to Bella being an atypical literary heroine.

“Bella is a quiet girl; she reads books. We don’t get a lot of quiet readers as our heroes,” she told Chang. Meyer also hypothesized that the series took off because she “was able to capture just a little bit of what it feels like to fall in love.”

Their love story spoke to a generation. For Meyer, it all came to her in a dream. She described the dream to Chang, saying, “It was a boy and a girl, and they were sitting in the sunshine in a beautiful forest. And he was glittering and sparkling. And in my dream, it was so beautiful.”

“I don’t even know how to process that,” she said about the enduring popularity of the series. “I wasn’t expecting fans when I started this. To be back here and still have people care … I mean, it’s really, really flattering, but I never expect that to last.”

Stephenie Meyers’ complete interview with Nightline airs on ABC News at 12:35 a.m. ET on Thursday, Sept. 18.
