‘Beauty and the Beast’ live-action spinoff movie ‘Gaston’ in development at Disney
No one’s slick as Gaston!
Iconic “Beauty and the Beast” villain Gaston is getting his own live-action movie at Disney, Page Six can confirm.
The new flick will be entirely separate from the 2017 live-action adaptation, which starred “Harry Potter” alum Emma Watson as Belle, and “Downton Abbey” actor Dan Stevens as Beast.
That version grossed over $1.2 billion at the global box office.
Luke Evans, who portrayed the arrogant, thick-necked hunter Gaston in that film, is not expected to reprise his role in this new iteration. (Evans had previously said in 2022 there was a “Beauty and the Beast” prequel in the works, but that it was delayed.)
The original “Beauty and the Beast” animated film was released by Disney in 1991 to both widespread critical acclaim and massive numbers at the box office, raking in more than $330 million globally.
It also made history in the awards space, becoming the first animated film to win the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), and the first animated picture nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.
It took home two Oscars: one for its titular song written by famed duo Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and another for its original score by Menken.
“Beauty and the Beast” follows Belle, a beautiful young bookworm who trades her freedom to a mysterious Beast in exchange for her father’s release.
Over time, she develops feelings for the Beast, much to the chagrin of Gaston, the town’s egotistical pretty boy with his eyes set on Belle’s heart.
The new spinoff film will be written by “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” scribe David Callaham and produced by Michelle Rejwan (“The Rise of Skywalker”).
Deadline was first to report the news of the “Gaston” film.
