Katie Couric calls Matt Lauer’s alleged rape victim Brooke Nevils ‘very brave’
Katie Couric feels nothing but empathy and respect for Brooke Nevils, who accused Matt Lauer of raping her.
The former “Today” show co-host, 69, told Page Six that she has not read Nevils’ memoir, “Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame and the Stories We Choose to Believe,” but did “read an excerpt.”
“I feel terrible for her,” Couric said at the City Harvest Presents The 2026 Gala: Shaken, Not Stirred. “I think she’s very brave to write the book.”
Lauer’s lawyer did not reply to Page Six’s request for comment.
Lauer and Couric worked together as co-anchors on the “Today” show for nearly a decade, from 1997 to 2006. Couric had long left the show before Lauer was unceremoniously axed in 2017 following accusations of sexual misconduct.
In her memoir, Nevils, a former NBC employee, alleged that Lauer anally raped her when they were both covering the Sochi Olympics in 2014. She also claimed that Lauer raped her in his “Today” show office.
She filed a complaint against Lauer with NBC in 2017. Several other women also came forward with their own claims.
Lauer was fired within 24 hours and later split from his then-wife, Annette Roque.
The disgraced media personality released a statement expressing remorse for some of his behavior but called his relationship with Nevils “consensual.”
Couric, who left the “Today” show in 2006 after fifteen years, had only lovely things to say about her time there.
“I will always have the happiest memories of my 15 years on the ‘Today’ show,” she shared. “It’s one of the best jobs in television news because there is so much variety.”
Couric added that “the hours aren’t easy” but waking up at 3 a.m. creates a “familial environment…It’s really unlike anything else.”
The TV personality joined other celebs, including Christie Brinkley, Bowen Yang and Jason Biggs, to raise money for City Harvest, an organization that distributes food to hungry New Yorkers.
