It Ends with Us Author Colleen Hoover Reveals Cancer Diagnosis as She Concludes Radiation
NEED TO KNOW
- In December, Colleen Hoover announced on a private fan Facebook page that she was diagnosed with cancer
- At the time, the It Ends with Us author confirmed she underwent surgery to remove the cancer and would be undergoing radiation
- On Monday, Jan. 12, Hoover announced she has one more day of radiation to complete
Colleen Hoover shared a health update with her readers.
On Monday, Jan. 12, the author, 46, announced via her Instagram Stories that she has one more day of radiation left at Texas Oncology.
“Second to last day of radiation,” she captioned a post on her Instagram Stories. “I wish I could blame my hair and facial expressions on @Texas.Oncology, but they’ve been great. Hope you never need them, but highly recommend them.”
In December, the author of It Ends with Us author announced on her Facebook page that she had been diagnosed with cancer. In the post, reposted by Katyinkc, she did not reveal her exact diagnosis, but shared that she had it surgically removed. She noted that she would need radiation, but no chemotherapy.
PEOPLE reached out to a representative for Hoover.
In the initial post, she explained that she was having “recurring” health issues while filming Reminders of Him, her forthcoming movie adaptation. “I continued to put off until the movie was finished.”
As she continued, she said candidly, “So while it felt huge and scary for a bit, and I had to miss out on the Regretting You premiere and some other important career and personal moment, I just wasn’t ready to share with anyone until I knew what the outcome would be.”
Months before she shared her diagnosis, on Oct. 17, she announced she would not attend multiple work events, including the aforementioned premiere. “I’m super bummed, but am having an unavoidable surgery and can’t travel for a while,” Hoover wrote in her Instagram post at the time.
“I’ll live vicariously through you guys,” Hoover continued. “So sad to miss this movie release and premiere, but so grateful to all the actors and the team who put this together.”
Then on Jan. 9, the best-selling author opened up about her cancer and shared that she went to a geneticist to learn more about her diagnosis.
“I got results back today from the geneticist that say my cancer did not come from family genes,” her Facebook post read. “It also didn’t come from the two main causes of the cancer, which are HPV and excessive hormones. This means it was more than likely environmental/lifestyle, which is lack of exercise, poor diet and stress.”
Hoover continued, “I’m happy and grateful to be alive but I hate vegetables. I hate when I have to get off the couch. I hate sweating. I hate when science is right. If you see me at the gym, don’t even tell me good job. If you see me at a restaurant eating grilled chicken and drinking water, I’m probably real mad about it.”
Hoover’s health updates and cancer treatment come amid a busy few months.
In October, her book Regretting You became her second novel to be adapted for the big screen. Meanwhile, throughout 2025, production on her hit novel, Verity, began — with Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett photographed running through the streets, holding hands, during filming in February.
Additionally, her third adaptation, Reminders of Him, is set to hit theaters on March 13.
Along with her books heading for movie theaters, the popular author also announced her latest book, Woman Down, which will hit shelves on Jan. 13.
The forthcoming novel follows an author named Petra Rose who’s forced to take a hiatus after “a viral backlash over her latest film adaptation,” the official synopsis teases. “Branded a fraud and fame-hungry opportunist, she learned the hard way what happens when the internet turns on you. And she’s been uninspired to write ever since.”

Despite the plot’s striking resemblance to the 2024 theatrical release of her novel, It Ends with Us, she told PEOPLE, “There are very few similarities between my life and this book.” Notably, the 2024 film and its release caused a legal battle between stars, Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, which ultimately overshadowed the film itself.
But Hoover is hopeful the new book will help her find “new, more positive ways” of connection within the book world. “Writing can be so rewarding, but being in the public eye can also sometimes make it terrifying,” she told PEOPLE. “I don’t mind walking away from it every now and then when it’s not working out, but I’ve always come back to it. So far.”
