Hilary Duff Shares NSFW New Song ‘Roommates’ and Calls Back to ‘Come Clean’ with a Rainy Music Video

The singer and actress, 38, released her racy new single “Roommates” alongside a music video on Friday, Jan. 16 as the latest offering from her upcoming album luck… or something.

“Roommates” features lyrics about longing for the exciting and NSFW parts of a romantic relationship that’s since become a bit more mundane. I only want the beginning, I don’t want the end / Want the part where you say, ‘Goddamn’ / Back of the dive bar, giving you head /Then sneak home late, wake up your roommates,” she sings on the chorus.

Reminiscing on a time when she and a partner weren’t “practically roommates,” she sings later in the track, “I’m touching myself looking at porn / ‘Cause you don’t even look my way no more.”

In a statement about the single, Duff explained, “’Roommates’ is a song about when life is life-ing, babe.”

The performer, who’s married to husband Matthew Koma, continued, “It’s that ache for a wilder, freer time — before the days were swallowed by carpools, budget talks, grocery runs and letting old or new insecurities slip in. It’s the restless hum of wanting to find your way back — to your rhythm, to your person, to yourself.”

The song’s music video (directed by Matty Peacock) finds Duff performing the song at home with a male romantic partner sitting nearby as she ruminates on their relationship. Midway through, rain starts pouring indoors — calling back to the video for her 2003 hit “Come Clean,” where she sits by a window watching a storm outside.

Toward the end, a wall falls down in Duff’s house to expose a picturesque field behind her as she walks outside and into the greenery.

Duff spoke about the “Come Clean” reference in an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the video set. ““Listen, we love a nugget, you know? We love an Easter egg,” she said. “I’ve had such a long career. It’s hard to not find the threads and to repeat some things. This song is very different than ‘Come Clean,’ but it’s nice to have another rain moment.”

Koma, who created “Roommates” with Duff and Brian Phillips, wrote on Instagram that his wife “crushed so hard” on the song — and he jokingly highlighted her “caboose” in a comment underneath a clip of her sopping wet in the rain scene.

Duff’s new album luck… or something comes out Feb. 20 and features “Roommates” as well as her previous single “Mature.”

Ahead of the album release, she’s set to perform shows in London, Toronto, New York City and Los Angeles on her Small Rooms, Big Nerves Tour. She’ll also take the stage at Voltaire at the Venetian Resort Las Vegas for residency shows in February and May.
