Sydney Sweeney cheekily reacts to backlash over stripped-down sports betting ad
Sydney Sweeney is unbothered.
The “Euphoria” actress cheekily reacted to backlash she received over her new stripped-down sports betting ad with Novig.
On Sunday, Sweeney posted a carousel of stills from the risqué campaign in which she was mostly unclothed.
“it’s gamedayyy @novig #novigpartner,” she captioned the Instagram post.
Sweeney also took to her Instagram Stories to share images of several athletes — including Serena Williams, Ronda Rousey, Karl-Anthony Towns, Jason Kelce and more — who have posed sans clothing for different covers of ESPN’s Body Issue.
The “Housemaid” star did not reveal why she posted the covers.
Page Six has reached out to Sweeney’s rep for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Last week, the Emmy nominee, 29, took to Instagram to share the first national brand campaign for sports betting site Novig.
In the one-minute clip, Sweeney posed with different sports equipment, including footballs, shoulder pads, basketballs and a tennis racket, to cover her bare chest, butt and vagina.
The ad sparked backlash from several female athletes, including British sprinter Amy Hunt.
“Sydney Sweeney, this is what women in sport look like,” Hunt, 24, told BBC Sunday after placing fourth in the 200 meter final at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
“21.4. Muscles. Hard work, blood, sweat, tears. This is a beautiful evening,” the athlete added, referring to Melissa Jefferson-Wooden’s winning time of 21.47 seconds, the fourth fastest ever over the distance.
American gymnast Gracie Kramer also hit at Sweeney’s ad, posting a montage of herself training with the caption, “I don’t know what Sydney Sweeney was doing, but this is what women in sport look like.”
Ariarne Titmus, Australia’s four-time Olympic swimming champion, also posted about the “Christy” actress’ controversial campaign.
“Not only is it a kick in the face to every woman who has dedicated her life to perfecting her craft, but every woman who enjoys sports for what it really is,” she wrote on Instagram.
“How do we live in a world where monetising a woman’s body and sexualising women’s sport is still a thing?” Titmus, 26, added.
Sweeney recently faced criticism for starring in an American Eagle ad that sparked controversy with its play on the word “genes.”
Fans claimed the campaign promoted “Nazi propaganda” and echoed “pseudoscientific language of racial superiority.”
