Typos on Kobe Bryant Statue Fixed After Errors Were Spotted at Unveiling
- The Lakers have fixed multiple errors, which plagued a Kobe Bryant statue at Crypto.com Arena
- The typos were corrected, and the team took the opportunity to make formatting changes and add the name of the statue’s sculptor
- Two more statues in honor of the late athlete and his daughter, Gianna, are set to be unveiled in the future
The Los Angeles Lakers have fixed numerous typos that plagued a Kobe Bryant memorial statue outside the Crypto.com Arena. The errors were first spotted after the 19-foot-tall marble statue honoring the late basketball star was unveiled on Feb. 8.
Originally, the names of Jose Calderon and Von Wafer — Toronto Raptors players who were listed in the replica box score from Bryant’s 81-point game — were misspelled, as was the word “decision.”
On Tuesday, April 9, the team made corrections to the statue, and also took the opportunity to make a few more fixes, the Associated Press reported.

The formatting on Bryant’s list of career stats was also adjusted. Additionally, his signature now reads “Kobe” instead of “Kobe 24,” and the name of the sculptor, Julie Rotblatt Amrany, was added to the base, ESPN reported.
The statue was first unveiled at a ceremony attended by Vanessa Bryant, former Lakers coach Phil Jackson, Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe’s former teammate, Derek Fisher and Lakers owner Jeanie Buss.
Vanessa, 41, who married Bryant in 2001, delivered an emotional speech at the unveiling, thanking fans for their support throughout the years.
“Kobe has so many people that have supported him all over the world from the very beginning and this moment isn’t just for Kobe, but it’s for all of you that have been rooting for him all of these years,” Vanessa said at the time.
Vanessa confirmed that two more statues will be erected in front of Crypto.com Arena — one showing Kobe wearing No. 8 and another featuring Bryant with their late daughter, Gianna.
A Lakers spokesperson told ESPN that the location for the statues is to be determined.
