OJ Simpson was “really not feeling well” just two weeks before he died at the age of 76, his close friend has revealed.

Bruce Fromong said OJ was scheduled to do a signing just a week and a half before his death, but called to cancel because he wasn’t feeling well. The former NFL star died on Wednesday, with his family confirming the news in an emotional statement.

When OJ cancelled on his friend, Bruce said he proposed rescheduling the event. However, OJ replied: “Nah, I just give me a little bit of time. Let me get to feeling better.”

Speaking to People, Bruce said: “He enjoyed getting around the guys and signing. That meant he was really not feeling well.” OJ had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in May last year and Bruce said he had known about the diagnosis, but not how “advanced” it really was.

He also said he believed OJ had beaten the cancer and thought he cancelled due to the flu. Bruce added: “We thought he was getting better, and he was not.”

OJ’s family announced his death in a statement which read: “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”

It’s been reported that OJ was surrounded by all of his children in the days before he died, including his two youngest children with his late ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson. Simpson had four children: Sydney and Justin with Nicole, and Jason and Arnelle with Marguerite Whitley.

It’s unclear exactly when the children were by his side, but sources suggest family members started arriving last Friday after being informed of his deteriorating health. TMZ reports that those who visited Simpson in the days leading up to his death were required to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). This allegedly included all family members, friends, and medical personnel assisting him while under hospice care.
