Saquon Barkley Says Proposing to Anna Congdon Made Him More Nervous Than Prospect of Playing 2025 Super Bowl

Saquon Barkley is opening up about popping the question!

On Monday, Feb. 3, the Philadelphia Eagles running back, 27, talked about his proposal to fiancée Anna Congdon, 26, during a Super Bowl press conference.

Asked whether asking her to marry him or the prospect of the upcoming Super Bowl made him more nervous, Barkley joked, “That’s the second time I had that question. I probably shouldn’t have said proposing.”

“I’m just not good with stuff like that,” he added of asking Congdon to be his wife. “I’m a lover boy, but I’m not like a clever lover boy.”

“I’m simple and basic,” he said, noting that football — “something I’ve been doing for a really long time” — is more in his comfort zone.

The star, who is set to compete against the Kansas City Chiefs at Sunday’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, also revealed that he’s been engaged to his longtime girlfriend for several months, despite the news only recently becoming public.

“This is not new by the way,” he said. “I know it just broke the other day but I’ve been engaged for like six months.

Barkley, who shares daughter Jada Barkley, 6, and son Saquon Jr., 2, with Congdon, spoke to PEOPLE earlier this month about the positive impact she has had on his life.

“I can’t be the athlete I am and have the success I have in my career without the help of her,” the NFL star said. “She … always has my back, not only in football but throughout life.”

“But as we continue to grow and mature and go through life together, we continue getting closer and continue to get even better,” he continued.

He added, “And it’s a beautiful thing because we have two amazing children that we were raised and we just sit back and laugh sometimes when they’re over there playing and just smile and think about where everything started.”

Barkley and Congdon met at Penn State University and began dating in 2017. Their first child, daughter Jada was born in April 2018 before their son Saquon Jr. was born in September 2022.
