Al Roker asked to test for hantavirus after attending daughter’s Paris wedding
Al Roker revealed that he was asked to be tested for hantavirus after leaving Paris following his daughter Leila’s wedding.
“I was coming from Europe this weekend from my daughter’s wedding, and the CDC was asking people to voluntarily test,” the famed weathercaster said on the “Today” show Tuesday as the anchors discussed the rare fatal respiratory disease that is transmitted to humans through contact with infected wild rodents.
“But they didn’t say for what, so I just wonder if it was a precaution here.”
Roker did not disclose whether he underwent any testing.
The journalist’s second daughter, Leila, tied the knot with her longtime beau, Sylvain Gricourt, in France on Mother’s Day weekend.
The French professional proposed in March 2025 while the couple was on a surprise trip to Venice.
Roker is dad to daughter Courtney, 39, whom he shared with his late ex-wife, Alice Bell; and daughter Leila, 27, and son Nick, 23, whom he welcomed with wife Deborah Roberts.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently taking precautions as Americans travel abroad to prevent hantavirus from spreading further.
Several people were infected with the deadly disease during a trip on the MV Hondius, a Dutch cruise ship that departed Argentina and had plans to visit Antarctica and several isolated islands in the South Atlantic.
So far, three deaths have been reported in connection with the ship, including a German passenger and a Dutch couple.
The World Health Organization announced Tuesday that it expects more cases of hantavirus to emerge in the days and weeks ahead, but assured there are no indications of a wider outbreak on the horizon.
“We expect more cases given the dynamics of spread on a ship and the virus’ incubation period,” the UN agency wrote on X.
“At the moment, there is no sign that we are seeing the start of a larger outbreak,” they added.
The passengers who were aboard the MV Hondius have been advised to quarantine at home or in a facility for 42 days starting from the day of departure from the vessel.
Hantavirus is the same disease that killed Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, in February 2025.
