Anne Hathaway stages surprise ‘Devil Wears Prada’ moment with Anna Wintour at Oscars 2026

Anne Hathaway and Anna Wintour, the inspiration for “The Devil Wears Prada” icon Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep), staged a surprise onstage moment at the Oscars on Sunday.

Hathaway and Wintour presented the awards for Costume Design and Makeup and Hair, with Wintour hilariously calling Hathaway “Emily” — Emily Blunt’s character in the iconic 2006 film — instead of Andy, Hathaway’s actual character.

The former Vogue editor channeled Priestly’s icy demeanor, ignoring Hathaway’s question about how she looked in her floral dress while launching into the nominees. She also wore chic shades on stage.

They presented the costume design award to Kate Hawley of “Frankenstein,” and the makeup and hairstyling award to Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey, also of “Frankenstein.”

The moment comes ahead of the highly anticipated May 1 release of “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which features the return of original cast members from the beloved 2006 film, including Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Streep and Blunt.

In the 2006 comedy-drama, Hathaway famously starred as aspiring journalist Andrea “Andy” Sachs, whose ambitions land her in an unforgiving environment at the fictional Runway fashion magazine.

In a ferocious sink-or-swim environment, she encounters the formidable editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (Streep) — said to be based on Wintour’s role at “Vogue” — her aloof assistant Emily Charlton (Blunt) and her loyal advisor and art director, Nigel Kipling (Tucci).

While Nigel provides warmth and guidance — along with frank advice — Miranda and Emily are harder on Andy, who hilariously struggles to gain a foothold in the world of fashion magazines.

Hathaway — who won a 2013 Academy Award for her role as Fantine in “Les Miserables” and was nominated for “Rachel Getting Married” in 2008 — recently spoke out on why the movie is so beloved.

“I think one of the things that we all love about that movie — I certainly loved when we made it — was watching what women do with power,” she said during an on-camera interview with Fandango, published on YouTube on March 12.

“And I love seeing what Miranda did with it. And what she did was drive everybody to their highest excellence.”

The “Dark Knight Rises” actress also shared that she thought it was “strange” that “it would ever strike anyone as being remarkable to be both a woman and ambitious. I’ve never understood it myself, why it’s in any way remarkable. I just want to get to work.”

In the joint interview, Tucci admitted that the line he’s heard most often from the original film is, not surprisingly, “Gird your loins.”

The pair also confessed that they never imagined the cast would reunite for a sequel, with Tucci labeling the film “something wonderful with really wonderful people in it.”

“I never thought it was going to happen,” he said. “I’ve never had this experience in 45 years in show business.”

Blunt, meanwhile, confessed during a 2022 interview on “The View” that she “would do [a sequel] in a heartbeat just to play with those guys again,” adding, “It’s so fun.”
